Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Jack C. O'Connell, of Lincoln Avenue, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon, July 22, 2011, surrounded by his family at his residence. He was 85. Born on Oct. 4, 1925 in Saratoga Springs, he was the son of the late Charles and Bertha (Strang) O'Connell and was a lifelong resident. A US Army veteran of World War Two, he served with Battery B of the 470th antiaircraft battalion as a corporal in the Asiatic-Pacific campaign. He was employed for 27 years as a printer and worked for the Saratoga Printing Company prior to his retirement in 1988. He was a member of Gurtler Bros. Post 420 Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion Adirondack Post 70, Fraternal Order of Eagles Saratoga Aerie #2586 and Musicians Union Local 506. A gifted musician, he had performed at numerous area venues for many years with his band, The Midnight Hour in the early '70's, Bits and Pieces and The Jokers. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Helen Agosta O'Connell in 1986. Survivors include his loving wife and soul mate, Maud (Hannam) O'Connell, whom he married on July 6, 199; his children, Sharon (Joseph) McDermott, Kelly (Ron) VanAlstyne and Kathryn (Jeffrey) Palmer; Maud's children, William ( Suzanne) Hannam, Thomas (Lisa) Hannam, Sandy Hannam (Mike) and Eileen Cunningham (Paul); 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30am Tuesday in St. Clement's Roman Catholic Church, 231 Lake Avenue. Burial with military honors will be conducted at 1pm Tuesday at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing and Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway 584-5373.
