Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Dr. James V. Miller, 81, resident of Saratoga Springs, New York since 1985, passed away on May 15, 2023 at Albany Medical Center.

Jim was born on October 25, 1941 in Boulder, Colorado. He was the son of the late James Victor Miller, Sr. and Elizabeth Johnson Miller. He and his younger brother Dean Miller were raised in Scotia, New York, where Jim graduated from Scotia-Glenville High School in 1959. He went on to Harvard University and then to Yale Medical School where he completed his studies in gastroenterology.

He worked at NIH in a lab in Washington D.C., and then joined the faculty at the University of New Mexico Medical School and started a private practice. He decided to change his specialty to Psychiatry and did his residency at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at the University of Illinois. He practiced psychiatry in Illinois until he moved to Saratoga in 1985 to join the group of Sam Mastrianni, M.D., which was developing Four Winds Hospital. He was also, since that time, in private practice until 2018, when he retired for health reasons.

Jim was always involved in athletics, as a rower at Harvard and then on Fish Creek in Saratoga when he was about 50 years old. He was an avid rower for the next 30 years and was a member of the Saratoga Rowing Club. He also competed at various regattas, namely the Head of The Fish, Head of the Charles, and The Green Mountain Head. He also loved to ski. He was taught by his father in Upstate New York and then taught his children when the family moved to Saratoga in 1985. He was an avid cyclist for many years, riding the hills east of Saratoga and taking bicycle trips around the world. He then added scuba diving with family and friends to his sports calendar. He was determined in the last 10 years to keep up with his workouts and sports despite some health issues. He also continued to read voraciously—history, biography, science. He was dedicated to his routine of reading and working out.

Jim is survived by his wife of 45 years, Merrily O'Connor Miller; his five children: Matthew Miller and his wife Holly, and his two granddaughters Lila Miller and Mia Vanderbilt Miller; Thomas O' Connor and Annette Eppler and grandchildren, Morgan, Mackenzie and Aidan O'Connor, all from Connecticut; Jack O' Connor from Albany, N.Y.; Lillie Miller and Mike Wotzak of Clifton Park; Jacob Miller and Christy Medick of Ballston Spa.

Jim is also survived by his brother, Dean Miller, from Hanover, Indiana; sisters- in-law Kathleen Ross of Naples, Florida, Liz DeBoer of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jenny and Scott Roltsch of The Woodlands, Texas, and brother-in-law Patrick Smith of Palm Gardens, Florida. He had sustained relationships with the medical and psychiatric communities.

He was loved by family, friends, and patients alike.
