Saratoga Springs, NY – James "Jim" Morrell, Sr., peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at the age of 73, surrounded by his family.

Jim was born in Amsterdam, New York on June 16, 1949, the son of the late John Morrell and Antoinette (Torani) Morrell.

Jim attended high school at Bishop Scully in Amsterdam, NY graduating in 1967 as the president of his class. He attended the University of Maryland for his undergraduate, later transferring to the University at Albany, where he earned a degree in psychology.

After graduating from college, Jim took over management and eventually sole ownership of Carpetland, a business that has been run by his family for over 70 years with two locations formerly in Amsterdam, New York and currently in Saratoga Springs, NY. Rain or shine, Jim was dedicated to the family business and serving the community he loved.

Jim's greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was married to his wife, Mary Lee, the love of his life for 47 years. Jim was a devoted father and grandfather to his two children and three grandchildren who brought true joy to his life. Jim attended every sporting event and school activities for his kids and grandkids, he took great pride in their accomplishments. Jim and Mary Lee also have many loyal and longtime friends that they enjoyed spending time and traveling with.

Jim is survived by his wife, Mary Lee; son, James (Ryann) Morrell; daughter, Kate (Francisco Mata) Morrell; three beautiful grandchildren, Jimmy James, Ella, and Axel; sister, Mary Eckert; brother, John (Butch) Morrell; many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends he considered family.

Jim is predeceased by his parents, John and Antoinette Morrell; one niece; one nephew and his favorite sister-in-law, Maureen Szamrej.

Family and friends may call from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm on Monday, April 17, 2023 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 (518-584-5373).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 18, 2023 at St. Mary's Church, 167 Milton Ave., Ballston Spa, NY 12020. There will be a private burial following the mass.
