Obituary

Albany, NY - On Sunday February 14, 2021 Jean Palmetto Shanley (formerly Jean Grace Palmetto), wife, mother of four and grandmother of four, passed away at the age of 94.

Born in 1926 in Saratoga Springs to the late Mary and Angelo Palmetto (founder of Palmetto Fruit Co.), she was the oldest of three sisters and graduated from St Peters School of Nursing in 1948 as a Registered Nurse. Jean met her husband on a blind date through mutual friends. Joe was studying Electrical Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY at the time and they attended a dance together. Jean was a stand in for another person who wasn't able to go. They almost never met! They married in 1951, celebrated 54 years of marriage and raised three children together. Her Grandchildren, Matthew and Christopher Koehler, Madison and Taylor Shanley, were her pride and joy.

Jean and Joe had an adventurous life, including moving 25 times with Joe's long career as an attorney for General Electric and traveling to many countries for business and pleasure. They traveled extensively through Japan, China, Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean together.  Jean was particularly fond of jigsaw puzzles, a good book, cooking and entertaining. She also enjoyed a good social chat and supporting those around her. She has been remembered by her many nieces and nephews as kind, sweet, and welcoming.

Along with her parents, Jean was predeceased by her husband W. Joseph Shanley Jr. and is survived by her children, W. Joseph Shanley III (Linda), Bryan (Taimi), Maria.

Jeans family plans a private burial and will gather for a memorial in the summer of 2021.
