Saratoga Springs, NY Jeanne A. Schreiber, of Prestwick Chase, passed away Friday, March 4, 2011 at Marys Haven. She was 85. Born on July 31, 1925 in Plainfield, NJ, to Edmund F. Garabrant and Jennie (Swody) Garabrant, Jeanne graduated from Scotch Plains High School in Scotch Plains, NJ, and then from Adelphi University with a BS in Nursing. A lifelong community activist, Jeanne served on the board of directors of the national organization of People to People, and for forty years as a troop leader and member of the board of the Girl Scouts of USA. She spent many years as a volunteer for the PTA in Sayville, NY, culminating as co-president with her husband, and was very active in the Sayville United Methodist Church. Additionally, Jeanne worked at BOCES on Long Island as a school nurse for the trainable mentally retarded (TMR), and served on the committee that advised parents and foster parents of the TMR. She and her husband moved to their retirement home in Newfoundland, PA, in 1983, where Jeanne became involved in the Hemlock Grove United Methodist Church and the Association of Retarded Citizens (ARC). Her dedication to the care of the retarded led her to become a member of the Pennsylvania State ARC Board, and then its Vice President. In 2000, she and her husband relocated to Prestwick Chase in Saratoga Springs, NY. The following year Jeanne joined with several other residents of Prestwick Chase to start a newspaper for the residents, and served as managing editor from September 2004 to December 2006. Jeanne enjoyed handcrafts, reading, puzzles, and gardening, and was well-known for knitting extraordinarily warm afghans for her family members. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, George, in 2004. She is survived by her three sons: Tom Schreiber (Shelton, WA), Frederick Schreiber (Sayville, NY), and Paul Schreiber (Vandling, PA); her three daughters: Katharina Schreiber (Santa Barbara, CA), Victoria Stoodley (Esperance, NY), and Penelope Schreiber (Nashua, NH); eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; her sisters, Ruth Gilburn of South Plainfield, NJ, and Barbara David of Greeley, CO; many nieces and nephews, and many good friends and neighbors.
