Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - John F. Hickey, of Lake Avenue, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, July 9, 2011 at his home. He was 92. Born on Dec. 2, 1918 in Saratoga Springs, NY, he was the son of the late Charles G. and Ellen F. (Fahey) Hickey and a lifelong resident of Hickey's Corners. A graduate of the former St. Peter's Academy, he was a US Army veteran of World War Two, serving as a staff sergeant with Company D, 708th Amphibian Tank Battalion in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre campaign. A recipient of numerous battle medals and ribbons, including several bronze service stars, he was employed for many years as a salesman for the former G. F. Blackmer and Son Company on Clinton Street prior to his retirement. A life member of Gurtler Bros. 420 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion Adirondack Post 70, he was also an honorary life member of Saratoga-Wilton B.P.O. Elks Lodge 161 and a former member of the Saratoga Springs Society of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. John was a lifelong dedicated member and devoted communicant of St. Clement's Roman Catholic Church. He was an honorary life member of Saratoga Council 246 Knights of Columbus, initiated into the Third Degree in 1956 and served as the council's financial secretary for many years. An honorary life member of Saratoga Fourth Degree Assembly 745 Knights of Columbus, which he joined in 1958 and was recently recognized as one of the oldest living members of the council at their Old Timers' Night in May. As an avid gardener, he enjoyed the outdoors. He also liked skiing and fishing with his son Brian. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, Charles P. Hickey who died Nov. 18, 1987; one sister, Anna V. Hickey who died July 16, 1997; his wife of 56 years, the former Josephine Sastinsky, whom he married on Oct. 12, 1946 and who died March 19, 2003; his son, Brian D. Hickey who died Feb. 3, 2011 and a sister-in-law, Ethel M. Sastinsky who died March 7, 2011. Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Marjory T. Hickey of Colonie and several cousins. Relatives and friends may call from 10 to 11:30am Thursday, July 14, 2011 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing and Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway 584-5373. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12noon Thursday in St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Avenue. Burial with military honors will follow in the family plot at St. Peter's Cemetery, West Avenue. Online remembrances may be made at www.burkefuneralhome.com. Members of the Elks will meet at 10:30am and members of the Knights of Columbus will meet at 11am Thursday at the funeral home for services.
