Saratoga Springs, NY - John Joseph Mangona, of Jenee Way, passed away Friday (May 21, 2010) at Saratoga Hospital. He was 84. Born on Feb. 6, 1926 in Saratoga Springs, NY, he was a son of the late Anthony and Rose (Capone) Mangona and was a lifelong city resident. He attended St. Peter's Academy and took classes at Cornell University. A decorated US Navy veteran of World War Two, he served in the Atlantic, North Atlantic and Pacific oceans. A communicant of St. Mary's Church in Ballston Spa, he was a member of the Brookhaven Golf Club, Ballston Spa Golf Club, Dominick Smaldone Post #35 Italian American War Veterans (ITAM) and was a former board member of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce. He retired in 1996 after 47 years, from the New York Racing Association at the Saratoga Race Track, where he served as the resident manager. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, Frank, Carl and Santo Mangona and two sisters, Virginia Vernoy and Gertrude Rodeno. He was the beloved husband for 62 years of Carmella (Carbone) Mangona, whom he married on May 2, 1948; devoted father of Nancy DellaPorta of Clifton Park; his son and daughter-in-law, John A. and Nancy Mangona of Saratoga Springs; loving grandfather of seven grandchildren, Michael, Tricia and Thomas DellaPorta, Melissa, Matthew, Rebecca and Erinn Mangona; brother of Rose Crawford, Theresa Rose, Anna Thompson and Diane Batton and survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30am Wednesday (May 26, 2010) in St. Mary's Church, 167 Milton Ave., Ballston Spa, by the Rev. Thomas Kelly, pastor.
