Saratoga Springs, NY - John E. Mongeon passed away Wednesday (Jan. 14, 2009) at Saratoga Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was 82. Born on May 14, 1926, he was the son of the late Jean and Vivaline Mongeon of Canada. John served in the Canadian Military and became a US citizen in 1955. He was a successful long time trainer and driver of standardbred horses. John made his living throughout the northeast and finally, in the late 70s, calling Saratoga home. Pop passed his love of racing to his sons and daughter and enjoyed coming to the barn each day to be with his family. He will be remembered for his gentle, loving, and selfless ways. He was a devoted husband, a wonderful father, a cherished grandpa, a true friend and will be dearly missed. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife, Lucile Mongeon;,a daughter, Ann Paradis and a brother, Ovila Mongeon of Canada. Survivors include his son, David (and his wife Barbara) Mongeon of Colonie, daughter Christine Cachaza of Saratoga Springs, son John G. (and his wife Ann) Mongeon of Ballston Spa, son Scott Mongeon and his companion Karen Stewart of Saratoga Springs; his greatest joys, grandchildren Eric Cachaza and Shane Mongeon of Saratoga Springs, Marie and Nicole Mongeon of Ballston Spa. He also had a great grandchild that he adored, Kaden Garland. John is also survived by brothers Roland and Edward Mongeon of Canada; sisters Victoria and Helen Mongeon of Canada and by many cousins, nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call from 1:30 to 4:30pm Friday at the William J. Burke and Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373). There will be a funeral service at the Burke Funeral Home at 3:30pm Friday. Private burial will be held in the spring.
