Obituary

Saratoga Springs - John W. More, 86, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April 25, 2023 after a brief illness.

John was born in Saratoga Springs on July 6, 1936, the third child of Harold and Anna More. A lifelong resident and third generation Saratogian, John was an avid historian and loved to tell stories of the city during his nine decades and those of his parents with his sharp and long memory. Growing up, John worked with his father and brother at their horse feed businesses in Saratoga, and loved to regale friends and family with stories of the famous people, and horses, he saw come through town.

John graduated from Saratoga Springs High School (in the now Lake Avenue elementary school building) in 1954. He received his teaching degree from Plattsburgh State Teacher's College in 1958 and moved back to Saratoga, the city he loved.

Around the same time, he met his wife of 54 years, a Skidmore student and Bennington Vt. native, Anne Buck. John and Anne were married in 1961 and built their life in Saratoga raising two daughters and later in life doting on their two grandsons who affectionately called him "Da".

John worked at Schuylerville Central School teaching fourth grade for 38 years. He loved teaching and as recently as this Easter would tell stories about many of the students he had and remembered after so many years. During the summers, he worked at the Saratoga Battlefield until the late 1970's and then at the Saratoga Racetrack until his retirement.

Upon retirement in 1996, John and Anne spent their time with their best friends, Anne's sister and brother-in-law, Marti and Billl Cogswell, whether it was traveling, playing bridge or just enjoying dinner cooked on the grill. He was also a very devoted member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Schuylerville, serving on the vestry for over 30 years.

After Anne's passing in 2015, he spent his time with his daughters and their husbands and his grandsons, visiting friends/family around town, and with neighbors from the street he lived on for almost 60 years – always dressed stylishly and for every occasion. During the pandemic, he also found a group of pals who met at Uncommon Grounds each day for a cup of coffee.

John was predeceased by his wife, Anne More; parents Harold and Anna More; brother and sister-in-law Charles and Ada More; sister and brother-in-law Katherine and Elmer Keller; and brother-in-law William Cogswell.

He is survived by his two loving daughters and their husbands, Cherlyn and Chris Fay and Kristin and Lee Hudson; his adoring grandsons Kyle and Alex Hudson; sister-in-law Marti Cogswell; nieces Linda Krone, Laurie Feldhaus, Anne Sprague and Melissa Hogan; nephews Gary More; David, Brian and Jonathan Cogswell; and many great nieces and nephews.
