Nicholas Alex
April 12, 1945 – May 14, 2024
Saratoga Springs, NY- John Nicholas (Nick) Alex, age 79, of Saratoga Springs and Boynton Beach, FL, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2024.
Mr. Alex was born on April 12, 1945 to John Alex and Winifred Kanaley Alex of LeRoy, NY. Nick was deeply proud of his LeRoy roots and often enjoyed sharing the town's claim to fame as the birthplace of Jello. Nick graduated from LeRoy High School and the State University College at Brockport. Mr. Alex was a veteran, having served in the United States Air Force for four years.
Coach Alex began his career teaching Physical Education at the former St. Peter's Academy and then went on to teach and coach for twenty-seven years at Saratoga Springs High School. He retired in June 2004. He coached Varsity Baseball, Varsity Boys and Girls Bowling and football at every level. Nick enjoyed the Saratoga race course and worked as a bartender there during many school summer vacations.
Mr. Alex was a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Ballston Spa. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and served as a Grand Knight for Council #246 in Saratoga Springs. Nick was an avid golfer and member of McGregor Links for almost fifty years. He could be found playing there most days and after retirement, while wintering in Florida, he played at Glen Eagles Golf Course in DelRay Beach. Nick was a loyal Buffalo Bills supporter and a Yankee baseball fan since childhood.
Nick is survived by his loving wife Patricia O'Malley Alex and beloved daughters Jacqueline (Jeremiah Maher) of Manlius, NY and Nicole of Troy, NY. He also leaves the greatest joys of his life his three grandchildren: Nicholas, Caroline, and Catherine Maher of Manlius and a sister Ginger (John Palloni) of Evans City, PA.
Relatives and friends are invited to call from 4-7pm on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at the William J. Burke & Sons/ Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home, 628 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Funeral services will be held in LeRoy, NY at St. Peter's Church on August 16, 2024 at 11 AM. Internment following at St. Francis Cemetery.
