Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - John J. Winarski, of High Rock Ave., died Thursday, March 30, 2017, approximately four months before his 102nd birthday.

Born on Aug. 5, 1915 in Schenectady, NY, he was a son of the late Jacob and Adela (Ogonowski) Winarski and a 1934 graduate of Schenectady High School. He enlisted in the US Army in 1934 and served with the 5th field artillery at Madison Barracks, NY, and was honorably discharged in 1937. He further served in the regular Army Reserves from 1939 and was discharged in 1941. During World War II, he immediately began employment in industry essential to national defense, working for American Locomotive in Schenectady as a piper and machinist. He continued working for ALCO for thirty years prior to retiring in 1970. John also was employed by General Electric and Systemation, both in Schenectady and for Pratt & Whitney in Hartford, CT. His numerous interests included golf, fishing and woodworking.

He was married for many years to Irma Putnam Winarski, who died March 31, 1999 and was also predeceased by a brother, Vincent W. Jastrebski of Schenectady.

Survivors include his sister Julia Witman and niece Sandy Labby both of College Station, TX; two nephews James Witman of AZ and David Witman of Vestal, NY, and Irma's daughter, Patsy A. Tompkins of Saratoga Springs.

Friends may call after 9:30am Saturday, April 15, 2017 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing and Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373), followed by a funeral service at 10:30am. Entombment will follow in Memory's Garden, Colonie.

Memorials may be made in his name to the Holy Name of Jesus National Catholic Church, 1040 Pearl St., Schenectady, NY 12303.
