Glens Falls, NY - Joseph D. Darrah, 88, of Stanton Nursing Home, passed away on Friday, August 2, 2013. Born in Saratoga Springs on Feb. 24, 1925, he was the son of the late Clayton and Margaret Darrah. Joseph entered into the United States Navy in 1943 and served until 1946. During his service time he saw extensive action in the Pacific Theatre earning the American Theatre Medal, The Asiatic Pacific Medal (4 stars), The Philippine Liberation Medal (2 stars) and The Victory Medal. After the Navy, he joined the Merchant Marines and sailed throughout the world for many years. Joseph then worked for the Pinkerton Security Agency at various race tracks in Saratoga, NY City and Florida and was known to his co-workers as "Saratoga Joe". He worked with Pinkerton's until 1976 at which time he suffered a stroke and was unable to continue working. Joseph spent the remaining years of his life as a resident of Saratoga Springs and could be seen for many years riding his bike around town. He enjoyed his coffee and ice cream at many local Stewart's shops. The last 10 years, Joseph was a resident of the Stanton Nursing Home in Glens Falls, NY. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Kenneth, Theodore, John, Ralph, Robert and Frederic Darrah and two sisters, Mildred and Dorothy Darrah. Survivors include his brother, Donald Darrah of Pinehurst, NC; niece Nancy Mullee (Gary and daughter Laura) of Ft. Myers, FL and nephew Jeffrey Darrah (Linda and daughters Evelyn and Cassaundra) of Gansevoort, NY. There will be no public calling hours and services will be at the convenience of the family. Many thanks to the staff at the Stanton Nursing Home for his care and the staff at Stewart's shops who made sure Joe had what he needed.
