Obituary

Saratoga Spring, NY - Judith Kay Scoggins, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many, passed away on Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at age 81 in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Judy was born Oct. 18, 1940, in Chillicothe, Missouri. She graduated from Chillicothe High School before earning a nursing degree from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Wichita, Kansas.

Nursing became a vocation and source of pride for Judy. She truly lived her life with a passion for helping others. Her nursing career was expansive and included work in various hospitals in Kansas, Missouri and Tennessee, from operating rooms to becoming a head nurse on surgical and recovery floors to eventually ascending to a supervisor of nursing position.

Outside the hospital setting, Judy worked in public health nursing as an advocate for at-risk children and families, in a cancer research hospital, and at the health center for Cleveland State Community College. She later returned to college to earn an associate degree in accounting while raising 3 children.

Judy's love and devotion to her family was limitless. Her background as a nurse gave her the skills, and her faith the strength to courageously care for her husband Ken at home for 16 years after a devastating stroke that left him paralyzed and with aphasia, unable to fully communicate.

She found joy helping others outside her family in being a tutor in adult education reading programs. She also loved volunteering for Habitat of Humanity with Ken before his stroke.

Judy was an amazing "quick" cook -- master of recipes that required minimal ingredients and could be put together quickly.  She won a recipe contest with a dish that she called "dump salad" and she took delight in making each of her kids' favorite dishes on their birthdays. She LOVED gardening, particularly flowers, and trees. Friends gave her the nickname "The Flower Lady" because Judy could pick a weed and turn it into a beautiful flower and always had some unusual flower in her garden that amazed neighbors.

Our mother was a devoted Catholic and member of St. Clements Church for 17 years. Previously, she was involved in numerous parish initiatives as a long-time member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Cleveland, Tennessee.

Judy is preceded in death by Ken, her loving husband of 55 years. She is survived by her three children Angie Spensieri (Tony), Andy (Tatiana) and Chip (Amy) and seven grandchildren Megan, Spencer, Joe, Kendall, Karson, Natalie and Andrew. She is preceded in death by her parents Bernard and Fern Englert and brother Larry.

The family would like to extend its gratitude to the healthcare workers at Saratoga Hospital, and particularly to her community of friends at Embury Apartments who made her feel at home and watched out for her.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider a donation to one of several local organizations that would align with our mother's passion for serving and caring for those in need:  Shelters of Saratoga (sheltersofsaratoga.org) and The Franklin Community Center (franklincommunitycenter.org).

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January, 14, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Clements Church followed by private family burial.
