Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Kenneth W. Humiston, 87, of Saratoga Springs and Chateaugay, New York and formerly of Oradell, New Jersey, died peacefully at home October 2, 2017.

Born in Chateaugay, New York, he was the son of the late Kathleen (Harvey) and Clarence Humiston.

He graduated from Plattsburgh State University and received his Masters Degree from Pennsylvania State University. He taught mathematics for 35 years at Ridgewood High School in Ridgewood, New Jersey. During those years he officiated soccer, basketball, baseball, and softball. He was past president of the Bergen County Soccer Officials Association and past president of the Bergen County Umpires Association. He was a member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials.

He proudly served for two years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Toul, France.

Ken's life centered around his strong Catholic faith and was a devoted and active parishioner of Saint Joseph's Church and School in Oradell, New Jersey for nearly 40 years. Since 1999, Ken was a daily communicant at St. Clement's Church in Saratoga Springs, New York. He was active in several ministries: the Redemptorist Associates, Arimathea Ministry, Food Pantry Ministry, lector and was a Eucharistic Minister. He was a fourth degree member of Saratoga Council 246 Knights of Columbus and served with the Color Corps.

Ken was the beloved husband of Maureen (O'Halloran), his wife of 60 years and father to Mark (Lynn), Michael (Janet), Anne (Bill), and Jim (Lori). He will be dearly missed by his eight loving grandchildren: Michael (Brianna), Caitlin, Kenny, Caroline, Kathleen (Will), Billy, Hayley, and Megan. He is also survived by his sister, Marie Pearl; brother, Gerard (Jean), and sisters-in-law, Mary I; Mary II; Barbara O'Halloran; Aileen Gallagher and many devoted nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers: Arthur, Robert, John, Jim and brothers-in-law: Elliot, Kevin, and Jack.

Summers on Chateaugay Lake enjoying family, friends and the outdoors were some of his most memorable times. Ken was happiest sitting on the porch with his family sharing stories of growing up in Chateaugay. His love and respect for his parents exemplified who he was as a person. He was a gentleman with a gentle soul who lived life with passion. He was sledding with his grandchildren, playing a round of golf with his sons and biking around the lake well into his 80's. His dry sense of humor caught people by surprise and left them chuckling long afterward. He had the kindest heart who always looked for the good in others. A quiet man, he set an example for his children and grandchildren in his meaningful words and actions. A teacher by profession, Ken's true calling was a teacher of humility, courage, and faith. He demonstrated these qualities every day. Each morning he read the Magnificat, applying the lessons to his daily life. He passed on these qualities to those lucky enough to call him Ken, Dad, Grandpa, uncle and friend.
