Saratoga Springs, NY - Kenneth C. Vredenburg (age 95) of the Embury Apartments passed on to eternal life on August 13, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Ken was born on March 3, 1917 and was the son of Clayton and Gertrude Vredenburg of West Hurley, NY. He graduated from Kingston High School and served in the United States Army during World War II where he trained recruits for active duty in Europe. Following the war, he was employed by Central Hudson Gas and Electric Company for 33 years as a line foreman and supervisor, and spent many hours climbing, building, and repairing poles and power lines in the Hudson Valley. He was a very active member of the Wittenberg Sportsmen's Club, the Rotary Club of Phoenicia, the Woodstock Cemetery Committee, the Airstream Travel Club, and the Woodstock United Methodist Church where he served as trustee, usher, and all around worker, especially in the building and opening of the Overlook United Methodist Church. Ken married Chrystal Mae Shultis of Wittenberg and built a lovely home in the Wittenberg valley under Mount Ticetonyk near Woodstock, NY. He loved his garden, camping, hiking, fishing, hunting and all outdoor activities. Ken and Chrystal moved to 118 Fifth Avenue, Saratoga Springs in 1979, joined the Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church, loved spending time with their family, grandchildren and friends and helping others, and continued to enjoy many trips throughout the United States and Canada with their motor homes and trailers. Grandpa had a wonderful workshop in the basement of that home that was often used to help his grandsons with science and social studies projects and building furniture for the family. He also enjoyed his hours spent at Fasig-Tipton where he worked as the night watchman. He always enjoyed chatting with the people there and all the excitement and anticipation that went along with the annual thoroughbred and yearling sales. They moved to the Embury Apartments in 1993, served on several committees, and were very active senior citizens for 21 years. In addition to his beloved wife of 60 years, Chrystal and his parents, Clayton and Gertrude, Kenneth is predeceased by a daughter, Cheryl Ann; his sister, Dorothy; his brother, Clark; a brother-in-law, William and three nephews, Danny, Lester, and Dennis. Survivors include his son, Jeffrey (Brenda); his daughter, Annette (best friend, June); his grandchildren, Christopher (Amie), Matthew (Nichole), and Megan; six great-grandchildren, Luke, Marc, Lilah, Shane, Lincoln, and Madelena; his sister, Eleanor Fitzpatrick-Leclerc (Joseph); a niece, Jeanne Shultis and his cat, Riley. Our family would like to express our deepest thanks and gratitude to all who helped Dad in these last months. We can never thank you enough for all you have done to assist him and us. You were all so very attentive to his every need. We were also most thankful that he was able to stay in his apartment with The Community Hospice of Saratoga assistance and be surrounded by his family and happiest memories of years spent with Mom. There will be no calling hours. His body has been donated to the Albany Medical College as an anatomical gift. Family members and friends are cordially invited to a Memorial Service on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at 3pm in the Embury Common Room near the lobby of the Embury Apartments. His daughter, Rev. Annette M. Vredenburg will preside at this service.
