Greenfield Center, NY – LaVern Utter, 95, passed away peacefully at his home in Greenfield on March 13, 2023, where he resided for the last 52 years. He was surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was married for 63 years to his devoted wife, Geraldine D. Utter, who predeceased him in 2016.
He was born on June 10, 1927, in Oneonta NY. He was the oldest son of his parents, the late Albert Utter and Neva Mae Utter. He graduated from Otego High School and proudly served in the Marine Corps from 1950 to 1951 when he received an honorable discharge. He served as an engineer on the D & H Railroad for 42 years before retiring.
He was a member in good standing with St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Ballston Spa, NY, and was a devoted and very active Third degree member of Saratoga Council 246 Knights of Columbus Council #246 and Past Faithful Navigator of Saratoga Assembly 745 Fourth degree. He served on the town board of Greenfield and worked for their environment committee.
He is survived by his three children; Carl Utter (Georgene), Kevin Utter (Myong), daughter Keri MacFarland (Sean); 12 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; his sister Linda and brother Richard Utter both from Otsego County in upstate NY.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Alvin and Carl Utter, and his sister Joyce (Utter) Martin.
Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 7pm Thursday (March 16, 2023) at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs. The Knights of Columbus will meet at 5pm for their service.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am, Friday (Mar. 17) in St. Mary's Church, 167 Milton Ave. Ballston Spa, NY. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Ave., Saratoga Springs.
