Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Lawrence J. (Larry) Ostwald passed away Monday, December 11, 2017 at Saratoga Hospital. He was 87.

Born on August 3, 1930 in Troy, NY, he was the son of the late Frank and Katharina (Hart) Ostwald, and was the third youngest of fourteen siblings. Educated in the Troy Public School system, he entered the US Army in 1951 and served as a maintenance and supply engineer in Yongdong Po, Korea until his honorable discharge as a first lieutenant in 1954. A 1961 graduate of Siena College, he taught high school mathematics for thirty years in the Saratoga Springs city school district, retiring in 1992.

On Nov. 19, 1960, he married the former Miriam Hogan in St. Patrick's Church in Troy, NY. In 1962 they moved to Saratoga Springs where they raised their three sons. They both remained active members of the historic Church of St. Peter and also volunteered within the community they loved.

Larry had served as a member and president of the Saratoga Springs Teachers Association. He was a former member and past president of St. Peter's Parish Council and had been a lector at the church for many years. An honorary life member and Past Grand Knight of Saratoga Council 246 Knights of Columbus, he was also a member of Saratoga Assembly 745 Fourth Degree. Along with serving on the city's 1968 charter revision committee, he was a member of the YMCA Board of Directors, devout Camp Saranac counselor and mentor to countless youth.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his eight brothers, John, Frank, George, Carl, Joseph, Leo L., Leo M. and Gerard Ostwald and four sisters, Bertha M., Dorothea Dorfner, Katherine Petruska and Gertrude Debboli.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years Miriam; their three sons and daughters-in-law, Lawrence (Beth) of Latham, Paul (Teresa) of Queensbury and Peter (Tracey) of Saratoga Springs; four grandchildren, Patrick and Christopher of Queensbury, Hannah and Maggie of Latham; one sister, Bertha A. Hogan and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends may call from 11am to 12noon Friday (Dec. 15) in the Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12noon in the church, celebrated by the Rev. Thomas H. Chevalier, pastor.

Burial with military honors will be at 1:30pm at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to The Church of St. Peter or to St. Peter's Needy Assoc. (SPNA), 241 Broadway, or to Catholic Charities, 142 Regent St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866. Online remembrances may be made at www.burkefuneralhome.com.
