Obituary

Lelia Amalfitano, a devoted wife, cherished sister, and an inspiring educator and artist, passed away peacefully on her 76th birthday, October 17, 2026. She was born in New York City, New York, on October 17, 1950, to the late Nicholas and Lelia Amalfitano (Lasante). Lelia's heartfelt connections and contributions leave a lasting legacy that will be cherished by her family, friends, and countless students.

Lelia’s academic journey began in the Bronx at St. Helena's/Monsignor Scanlan High School, where she first discovered her passion for art. Her pursuit of knowledge and creativity led her to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts from CalArts, followed by a Master of Fine Arts from the prestigious Chicago Art Institute. Her dedication to education and the arts fueled a distinguished career that spanned several decades.

Lelia began her professional journey teaching painting and drawing and curating exhibitions at the Junior College of Albany. Her career flourished as she became the Director of Exhibition and Public Programs at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, where she curated nationally recognized exhibitions and lecture series. Lelia's passion for art eventually brought her to Brandeis University, where she served as the curator of the Rose Art Museum. Her love for teaching led her to Harvard University and, finally, to Boston College, where she inspired many before retiring.

In 1996, atop the beautiful Mount Heavenly in Nevada, Lelia married the love of her life, Edward Lloyd. Their bond was a testament to love, support, and shared adventures. Lelia cherished her family deeply, including her brother Nicholas Amalfitano (Barbara), her sister Madelyn Amalfitano, Sisters in law Marilyn Lloyd (Joe), Brenda Hawthorn (Gerard) and Jeanine McGuiggan (Tim) as well as Bothers in law Tom and Jim Lloyd (Kelly) her and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Known for her vast knowledge of art and art history, Lelia had a remarkable ability to communicate complex concepts in an accessible manner, always ensuring that anyone with an interest in learning felt welcomed and understood. Her warmth and generosity were as boundless as her love, for traveling, hiking, and skiing, and her zest for life's adventures.

In keeping with her wishes, a private ceremony will be held to honor Lelia’s life.

Lelia's passion for the arts have illuminated the paths of many, and her legacy will continue to inspire future generations. She will be profoundly missed but forever remembered in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know her.
