Greensboro, NC - Leona Mullaney died at her home in Greensboro, North Carolina, on December 25, 2009. She was 72. Leona Isabelle Cooke Mullaney was born on Feb. 23, 1937, in Cobleskill, New York, the oldest of five children born to Alfred Cooke and Dorothy Osterhout Cooke. She was raised on a farm near Middleburg, NY, and at an early age cultivated interests in reading, knitting, and gardening--whenever space, sunshine, and physical ability afforded opportunity for the latter pursuit. Her life work revolved around being a loving wife, raising her two children, and enjoying the gift of her grandchildren. Leona is survived by her spouse of 39 years, John, of Greensboro, and her two children, Timothy, of Greensboro, and Maureen Mullaney of Washington, D.C. She also leaves her daughter-in-law, Melissa, and her cherished grandchildren, Madison and Liam Mullaney, both of Greensboro; her sister, Dorothy Lewandowski, of Duanesburg, NY and brother, Shubel Butch Cooke, of Schenectady, NY, nephews, nieces and cousins also survive. Leona was predeceased by her parents and siblings, Sally Mott and Mary Cooke. Leona was a caring and engaging person who related to people openly, warmly, and with generosity. Her legacy of love lives on in those whose lives she touched. Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 3pm Saturday (Jan. 2, 2010) at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (584-5373). The funeral service will follow at 3pm Saturday at the funeral home.
