Obituary

Malta, NY - Leonard H. Breen, 83 years of age, joined his beloved wife Helen Mary in eternal life on Thursday, November 8, 2012. His unwavering desire to be by her side throughout was realized because of his own inner strength and resolve. Len died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving and devoted family, just 24 days after his cherished wife's passing. Len, the son of the late Myrtle Mae Breen and Leonard J. Breen, was born on July 7, 1929, in Saratoga Springs. At the age of 17, he first laid eyes on Helen Mary, and thus began their lifetime journey with their six children and 14 grandchildren. Leonard was a man of integrity, honor and strength who was respected by all. He was the ultimate provider and protector of his family, with a strong work ethic, uncompromising morals, and an abiding faith in God. He began his career as a painter at Wilton Developmental Center and retired 34 years later as Plant Superintendent. He and Helen Mary retired on the same day in 1990 and enjoyed many wonderful years together thereafter. Their happiest moments were spent on the seashore with their children and grandchildren, creating many precious memories for all. "Bumpa's" love and devotion to each of his grandchildren defined his true nature. He possessed the most meaningful gift in life - the ability to be truly present for each child, and because of this, his love was returned tenfold. Len felt great pride in his service in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean Conflict, and was an active member of the Korean War Veterans' Association and the VFW Post 420. He was predeceased by his parents, Leonard J. and Myrtle Mae Breen, his wife, Helen Mary Breen, and his brother, Ronald Breen. Survivors include his sons, Patrick (Jeanne-Marie), Daniel (Kelly), Leonard, Andrew (Linda), and daughters, Nancy Breen Lamb (Michael) and Susan Batchelder (Jonathan). He was cherished and adored by his grandchildren: Brendan, Kelsey and Norah Breen, Rachael and Caitlin Lamb, Alex and Aidan Klein, Edwidge and Rowan Breen, Jenna and Molly Batchelder, and Conor, Griffin and Gavin Breen. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Shirley Karr and Jean Coppernoll, and many caring nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express profound gratitude to Dr. Richard Duff for his compassionate, diligent, and respectful care throughout the past several months, and to Kelli Foley, RN (The Community Hospice), for her gentle and loving support and care. Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 7pm Monday, Nov. 12, 2012 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing and Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs 584-5373. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am Tuesday in the Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway, by the Rev. Dominic S. Ingemie, pastor. Burial with military honors will follow at 12noon Tuesday at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
