Obituary

Burnt Hills, NY -  LeRoy "Roy" E. Palmer, 82, passed away with his wife Gail present, at the Saratoga Center for Rehab and Nursing Home, Ballston Spa, NY on June 25, 2017.

A lifelong resident of the Charlton-Burnt Hills area, LeRoy was born in Corinth, NY and he was adopted as a young boy by the late Leland and Edith Palmer. He was brought up and continued to work on his parent's farm for many years. From 1958-1960, he served in the United States Army in Germany.

Roy's involvement with 4H began as a child when he was a member of the West Charlton Rascals from 1951-55. His daughters continued the tradition as they showed cows, goats, rabbits, etc. at the Saratoga County Fair and elsewhere. Family trips included showing at the NYS Fair. Roy was a 4H leader for many years, particularly the Division Street Raiders in Charlton. He fully supported the creation of the 4H Training Center in Ballston Spa and was the chairman from 1985-87. He was a NYS Shooting Sports instructor from 1993-97, enjoyed deer hunting, and was a lifetime member of the NRA. He was always actively involved in his community as a member and past chief of the West Charlton Fire Dept., a Farm Bureau and Charlton Grange member, and past director of the Sweetman Cemetery.

He had a great love of the Saratoga County Fair and worked there for many years in the Grounds and Buildings Dept. Roy was on the Fair Board from 1986-2012, served on the Executive Committee from 1998-2008, and was President from 2007-2008, served as Vice president and secretary, and was on the concessions committee for many years. Every summer he and Gail toured all the local fairs, looking for new ideas and ways to improve "his" fair. Roy and Gail enjoyed many years of motorcycling together, belonging to 2 Goldwing chapters, and once were "Couple of the Year". Touring all over the east coast, they attended rallies as far as St. Louis, Missouri. When his health prevented his motorcycling, he bought a 1973 Cadillac convertible and attended many car shows and parades, and was a member of the Cadillac-LaSalle Club. Later in life, he was a BHBL Central School District bus driver, and worked for the Charlton Highway Department. Throughout their 25 years of marriage, Roy and Gail enjoyed camping in various truck campers, trailers and motorhomes. Roy will be remembered for his gentleness, teasing and laughter, his twinkling blue eyes and his active community involvement. He was predeceased by his former wife, Kaye.

Roy is survived by his wife, Gail; his daughters Kim Kline, and Susan (Sean) Coyle; stepchildren Scott (Jennifer) Crawford and Tammy (Sean) Townsend, 4 grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
