Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Lewis H. Bruce passed away peacefully at his home at The Woodlawn Commons on May 30th, at the age of 92.

Born on May 12, 1933, in Keene, NY, Lewis proudly served his country after enlisting in the U.S. Navy at the age of 18 during the Korean War. He served as Mineman Second Class in Fleet Aircraft Service Squadron 110 and held positions with Commander Fleet Air Wings One, Two, and Four. His honorable service was recognized with several decorations, including the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. After his military service, Lewis pursued a career in telecommunications with Verizon. One of his proudest professional achievements was helping to install communication systems for the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.

Lewis is survived by his beloved sister, Lorraine Bruce Douglas, her children, and grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Nellie Bruce, and by his older brother, Warren Bruce. Lewis is also survived by Warren's children and grandchildren.

Later in life, Lewis found love again with his second wife, Clara Helen Sciartelli. They shared many happy years together traveling and embracing life to the fullest. Following her passing, Lewis remained close with her children and grandchildren, who continue to cherish his memory.

A man of many talents, Lewis was an accomplished artist, photographer, and published poet. He played the piano and had a deep appreciation for classical music and opera. He also had a lifelong love of nature and wildlife, especially cardinals, which held a special place in his heart. Lewis was known for his curious mind and love of tinkering—from his youth all the way through his 90s. In his later years, he became known for his creativity at The Woodlawn Commons, where he would design posters combining his artwork and poetry to share in the community's Poetry Corner. He enjoyed taking long walks through the hallways and outdoors, whether accompanied by staff or on his own. And he had a well-known sweet tooth—he never turned down dessert, no matter the size of the meal! At 92, Lewis remained engaged with life and loved meeting new people. When asked to go do something Lewis always said yes. His warmth, gentle spirit, and kind smile left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Lewis was a quiet and gentle soul, whose presence brought joy and a sense of peace.

He will be truly missed.
