Obituary
Saratoga Springs – Manuel "Manny" Aven, PhD, died on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at the Home of the Good Shephard in Saratoga Springs after a long illness. He was 93.
Manny graduated from the prestigious Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and received a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh after coming to the United States in 1949. He managed research departments at General Electric for 40 years, first in Cleveland and then in Schenectady. He retired in 1992 as a GE consultant in Hungary. After his retirement he devoted his professional energies to the Union College Academy for Lifelong Learning (UCALL). He gave lectures on many subjects and served as Chair of the Curriculum Committee for 9 years. For his extraordinary service he received the first UCALL Niemeyer Award and was one of only three people in the 30-year history of UCALL to be made a Member Emeritus of the UCALL Steering Committee. His wisdom, high spirits, and warm and caring company will be missed.
Manny has also written several books, is a three-time Adirondack 46er mountain climber, and has bicycled and climbed mountains throughout Europe. He said he climbed the 46 high peaks in the Adirondacks with is oldest son.
Survivors include his wife of five years, Irene, son Peter Aven, his spouse Barbara, and their children Tamara, Marc, and Andy, son Mike Aven, his spouse Linda York, and their children Nikolai and Kristina, and step-son Rodney Gwiazdowski, his spouse Rebecca, and their children Rylee and Carlee.
Manny is predeceased by his first wife, Sylvia Kaar who passed away in 2004.
Relatives and friends may call from 10 to 12noon, Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (518-584-5373). A funeral home service will begin at noon. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Peter's Cemetery.
