Hague, NY - Margaret Darrin, "Peggy", passed away peacefully at her home on May 22nd, 2017 with loving family and friends by her side. A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and dear friend, she will be greatly missed by the many people whose lives she touched in her 92 years.
Born October 30th, 1924 in Detroit as Margaretta Anna Voelkner, Peggy was the daughter of the late Hedwig T. (Boettcher) and Arthur Otto Voelkner. At a social event in Detroit shortly after WW II, Peggy met a handsome young Navy pilot, David M. Darrin, who swept her off her feet. Peggy and David were married on July 25, 1948 and moved to New York City where David worked for the family business, Automatic Switch Company, and Peggy recalled assisting Lauren Bacall at Georg Jensen's jewelry counter on Fifth Avenue where she worked.
This young, dynamic couple enjoyed all New York City in the early 1950's had to offer: music, arts, food and the people who would remain friends for life. As many of their contemporaries did, Peggy and David moved to the suburbs of New Jersey to raise their three spirited sons, David, Timothy and Drake. The couple loved adventure and during David's years as an accomplished race car driver racing in the Bahamas and Watkins Glen, with Peggy clocking his time, they met an exceptional racing crowd who became a part of their social life off the track as well. Peggy was an especially graceful downhill skier, developing her skills on the slopes of Vermont and Switzerland with her family. She also enjoyed a good round of golf with friends at the Ticonderoga Country Club near the family summer home. Her waterskiing career, however, was cut short with a spectacular spill and an equally spectacular "wardrobe malfunction".
David and Peggy spent their honeymoon on Lake George, a place that would become a central part of Peggy's life. Returning as campers for many summers, the family purchased a home in the early 60's that has remained a destination for days full of swimming, sailing and entertaining friends and family. A longtime supporter of Lake George conservation, Peggy donated waterfront property in downtown Hague to the Lake George Land Conservancy. "Peggy's Point" is now a public park and a popular spot for anglers and anyone wishing to enjoy the beauty of the lake she cherished. Peggy and David's long relationship with RPI (David's alma mater) and RPI's research facility on Lake George, resulted in endowments from the Darrins to purchase the facility's Bolton Landing location, known as the Margaret A. & David M. Darrin '40 Fresh Water Institute (DFWI). Peggy spearheaded renovations of the student housing after touring the dormitory and declaring it in need of updating, complete with her flair for Adirondack-style furnishings. More recently, Peggy has been a supporter of the Jefferson Project at the DFWI.
In addition to her parents, Peggy is predeceased by her devoted husband, David and her sisters, Vicky and Kaye. Peggy is survived by her loving sons, David, Timothy and Drake and his wife Laura, and her grandchildren Hannah, Christopher, Danika, Duncan, Logan and Ava.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY (518-584-5373) on Wednesday, May 31st from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. Funeral services and burial will be private.
