Saratoga Springs, NY - Margaret S. Van Dorn, 87, passed away Saturday (Nov. 5, 2016) at the Wesley Health Care Center.
Born on Dec. 17, 1928 in Ramsey, NJ, she was the daughter of the late David F. and Ida Marie (Heavey) Smith and a graduate of Ramsey High School. Following graduation, she moved to Saratoga Lake and went to work as a phone operator for the NY Telephone Company. It was there that she was introduced to her future husband, William E. Van Dorn. Together they raised their family and ran the E.H. Holland printing and stationary store on Caroline Street for over 30 years. They retired in 1995 and loved spending time with their families and traveling to their special destination of Ogunquit, Maine.
A member of Bethesda Episcopal Church, she taught Sunday school, was a member of the Altar Guild at Bethesda and served on the Board of Directors of the Home of the Good Shepherd. Marge was an avid reader, gardener, embroiderer and knitter.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husband of 53 years, William E. Van Dorn on Aug. 11, 2004 and one brother, David F. Smith.
Survivors include three children, William Van Dorn of Columbus, OH, Margaret (Gerald) Verrigni and Patricia (Daniel) Thornton, all of Saratoga Springs; six grandchildren, Nicholas (Jamie) Verrigni, Anna (Marc) De Angelo, Ralph W. Grotto, Brendan Thornton, Gabriel and Trina Van Dorn; two great-grandchildren, Owen and Evan Verrigni and three sisters, Ida Marie Fried and Virginia Lewis, both of Lakeland, Fl and Barbara Lou Steinacker of North Carolina and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours.
Services will be conducted at 11am Saturday (Nov. 12, 2016) at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing and Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373). Burial will be in Greenridge Cemetery, Lincoln Ave.
Following interment, Marge requested that everyone join the family for an ice cream social and lunch at Mama Mia's Restaurant, 185 Ballston Ave. She further requested that no flowers be sent, yet memorial donations may be made in her name to the Saratoga County Animal Shelter, 6010 County Farm Road, Ballston Spa, NY 12020.
The family wishes to thank "the caring Angels" on Victoria 3, Wesley, who cared for her during the past few months and also express their gratitude to Dr. Roland Phillips, not only her friend, but her caring doctor.
