Fincastle, VA – Marian (Maffeo) Giacomino, 93, formally of East Greenbush, NY, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2016 with her daughter Leonora at her side.
Born and raised in Albany, NY on April 14, 1922 on Good Friday to Irene (Sinisgalli) Maffeo and Anthony Maffeo, Marian was the youngest of seven children.
As a young girl, she enjoyed being pampered and spoiled by her older siblings, and loved to play with her neighborhood friends, and in her father's grocery store. She also taught herself how to play the piano as a young child, and continued to play throughout her life. As a teenager, Marian was employed for two years at Woolworth's Dept. store in Albany at various counters. Her favorite counters to work were the jewelry and record counters. After leaving Woolworth's, she became employed at the New York Telephone Co. where she stayed until she married.
Marian loved traveling to NYC on the train, and would often do this with her co-workers on weekends. She took trips by train to Miami, Florida with her friends as well. On June 9, 1946, she met her future husband, Charles, at Mid-City Pool in Menands, NY. They married seven months later on January 12, 1947. She and her husband spent their marriage devoting their time to their home and raising their three daughters. Marian was an excellent cook and loved to bake pies. She always had room at her table for guests. She and her husband also loved planting flowers every spring, and a vegetable garden every summer, but it was their love of music that they had in common. They liked to listen to their Big Band albums, and eventually in the late 60s through the early 80's they began playing for the public, she on the keyboard, her husband played guitar, and a drummer. They named themselves "The Charles Three." They often played at weddings, anniversary parties, New Year's Eve parties, etc. Marian also sang, and kept up with the latest hits on the radio, making sure she pleased the audience. When her husband retired in 1982, they began traveling, often taking day trips and vacations to Florida. They truly were each other's best friend.
Marian was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Charles Giacomino, in May 2005 and her eldest daughter Charlette Giacomino in January 2009; her three brothers, Daniel Maffeo, Leonard Maffeo, and Anthony Maffeo and her three sisters, Katherine Carusone, Millie Carusone, and Angie Farina. Survivors include her two daughters Leonora (Steve) Drzymala of Fincastle, VA and Candace (John) Anglesey of East Greenbush, NY; sister-in-law Marie Maffeo of Troy, NY; five granddaughters Claire Hoffman, Chelsea Drzymala, Audrey Taylor, Tess Drzymala, and Stephanie Anglesey, and four great grandchildren Marian Hoffman, Jack Hoffman, Matthew Hoffman, and Hugo Guertin-Cabana. Marian is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will take place at 1:30pm on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Ave., Schuylerville.
