Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Marie E. (Betty) Donohue Jones of Saratoga Springs and most recently a resident of the Home of the Good Shepard in Malta, died peacefully Wednesday, March 12, 2014, surrounded by her family. She is 90. Born on February 18, 1924 in Glens Falls, NY to the late Lloyd and Hazel (Nolan) Donohue, she graduated in 1942 from St. Mary's Academy in Glens Falls and attended nursing school in Manhattan. Betty married the love of her life, the late Ellsworth J. Jones on May 17, 1947; Ellsworth having died on December 31, 2006. Betty and Ells resided in Saratoga Springs following their marriage, moving from their first home at 20 Clinton Street to apartments on Maple Avenue and York Avenue, before settling at 85 Court Street and building a lifelong friendship with Norm and the late Eva Fox. They were devoted parishioners of St. Clement's Roman Catholic Church, along with their close friends, the Zabalas, Collins', Butlers', McNearys', Veitchs', Colamarias' and many others. Betty spent many afternoons with her close friend and neighbor, the late Nettie Cummings, with whom she played golf for over three decades. While raising four children in the fifties and sixties and building the family business, The Hayes Tobacco Company, with her husband, Betty still found time to volunteer in the community, including work with the March of Dimes, Caroline Street PTA, St. Clements Horse Show, and the Meals on Wheels program. Following the sale of The Hayes Tobacco in 1977, Betty spent a great deal of time on community activities with Ells during his five terms as Mayor of the city of Saratoga Springs, from 1980 through 1990. During those years, Betty and Ells became close friends with Marylou and Sonny Whitney, enjoying many summer evenings on the dance floor during the August race meet. Betty remained close friends with Marylou and her husband John Hendrickson, during the later years of her life as well as Heather Mabee, who gave so many hours to both Betty and Ell's as both were comforted by Hospice care. Betty's family remained the center of her life. Her fifty nine year marriage to Ells was magic. In her later years, she beamed with pride telling friends and sharing pictures of her grandchildren Ryan and Logan. In addition to her parents and late husband Ellsworth, she is predeceased by three brothers, the Very Rev. D. Leonard Donohue, Robert Donohue and Bill Donohue and one sister, Eileen Rozell, along with her eldest son, John Francis Jones. Survivors include her sons, Mark (Lana) of Geneva, NY and Matthew of Saratoga Springs; daughter Suzie (Sandi) of Medford, OR; grandchildren Ryan Jones, Logan Jones and their mom, Tammy Jones of Saratoga Springs; a sister Carol (Jerry) Yager of Brentwood, TN; sister-in-law Nancy Donohue of Hudson Falls, NY; brother-in-law Bob Rozell of Glens Falls and another sister-in-law Peggy Donohue of South Glens Falls, NY; her beloved nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and others in her extended family. Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 7pm Sunday (March 16, 2014) at William J. Burke and Sons/Bussing and Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway 584-5373. A service celebrating her life will be conducted at 9:30am Monday in St. Clement's Church, 231 Lake Avenue and burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, So. Glens Falls, NY.
