Obituary

Saratoga Springs - Marion J. Miller, age 95, of Saratoga Springs, NY passed away peacefully on June 6, 2025, at the Wesley Health Care Center.

Marion was born in Saratoga Springs on October 18, 1929, the daughter of L. Foster James and Margaret M. Rowland. She spent her childhood growing up on Walton Street, attended School Number 2, and graduated from Saratoga Springs High School in 1947. In 1948 she married Nelson E. Derlick, Jr. with whom she raised four daughters.

In 1962 she began her career with Skidmore College as secretary of the English Department, retiring in 1984. During her time at Skidmore, she developed many lifelong friendships. Those who knew her would agree she was "the glue that held the department together".

Marion's next chapter began when she met and married Edward W. (Bill) Miller. With him she lived a life of love, travel and adventure.  Together they traveled across the United States and Europe. Germany being the place they spent much of their time. Marion was never short of words, wherever in the world she was she would find someone to talk with. She enjoyed playing golf with Bill at Brookhaven Golf Course and as a member of the Par 29 Women's League at the Saratoga Spa State Park having achieved a hole in one on August 1, 2002.  She found joy giving back to her community as a volunteer at the Saratoga Springs History Museum in the Canfield Casino. Marion loved her hometown and was very proud to call herself a "Native Saratogian".

Her memory will live on with her daughters and grandchildren who she deeply loved and cherished with all her heart.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her grandson, Cory J. Lambert; brother, Frank M. James; and son in law, Roy J. St. John.

Marion is survived by her husband, Edward W. Miller; daughters, Nanci St. John (James), Joan Brophy (John) both of Saratoga Springs, NY, Susan McCoy (Kevin) of Fayetteville, NY and Diane Russell of Malta, NY; grandchildren, Alexandra Rogers, John Brophy, Adam Brophy, Aimee Brophy and her first great granddaughter due in September; brother, L. Foster James, Jr. (Kathleen), stepchildren, Lisa Miller and Stephen Miller as well as a niece and nephews.
