Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Marion Hewitt Waring went home to the Lord Friday, Jan. 29, 2010 at Schuyler Ridge Residential Health Care in Clifton Park, NY. Mrs. Waring lived most of her life in Saratoga Springs, New York. Born in Schuylerville, NY on January 23, 1919, the eldest of nine children, she was the daughter of the late George J., Sr. and Julia (Conroy) Hewitt. Mrs. Waring recently celebrated her 91st birthday. A 1943 graduate of SUNY Plattsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, Mrs. Waring taught for four years before marrying in 1947. She was a member of the Cornell University Cooperative Extension and in years past, led a local 4-H group. A member of St. Clements Roman Catholic Church, Mrs. Waring belonged to the Catholic Daughters of America for over fifty years. She was also a member of the Ladies of Charity. Her dedication to and belief in education led Mrs. Waring to serve as a member of the Saratoga Springs School Board of Education from 1976 through 1979. Interested in local politics, Mrs. Waring also ran for Supervisor in Saratoga Springs as an independent candidate. She was a lifelong member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and a past board member of the Saratoga Historical Society. Her joy in learning and desire to share that knowledge, as well as her love for children, prompted Mrs. Waring to return to substitute teach after raising her family. An avid fan of thoroughbred racing, Mrs. Waring was a docent at the Saratoga National Museum of Racing. She was a great fan of the NY Yankees and watched the games regularly - even into her 90s! Mrs. Waring was proud of her Irish heritage and was also a member of the Irish Georgian Society.Mrs. Waring loved flowers and gardening and was a lifelong member of the Katrina Trask Garden Club, participating in many flower shows where she won numerous ribbons.One of Mrs. Warings favorite poems was Robert Frost's, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. The final line, And miles to go before I sleep exemplify Mrs. Warings life where she filled those miles with love, joyous laughter, and generous service to her family and friends who will miss her dearly. Predeceased by Edward J., Sr., her husband of 55 years, Mrs. Waring is survived by her six children, Edward J. Waring, Jr. of Boston, MA, Rosemary W. Eichenlaub (Edward) of Rochester, NY, Judith W. Van Buskirk (Thomas) of Fairport, NY, Jane E. Waring~Pelkey (Lester) of Paxton, MA, Michael G. Waring (Connie) of Minneapolis, MN and Joseph J. Waring (Anne) of Richland, WA; five grandchildren, Brian and Julie Eichenlaub of Rochester, NY, Christine Waring of Minneapolis, MN and Caroline and Matthew Waring of Richland, WA. Mrs. Waring is also survived by four sisters, Katherine C. Racko of Schenectady, NY, Julia F. Hewitt of Clifton Park, NY, Patricia M. Hewitt of Clifton Park, NY, Eileen H. Spelman of Jacksonville, FL; two brothers, Joseph G. Hewitt of Schenectady, NY and George J. Hewitt of Clyde Hill, WA and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Waring was predeceased by two brothers, Donald E. Hewitt of Schuylerville, NY and William L. Hewitt of Rutland, VT, both World War II heroes. The family of Mrs. Waring would like to thank the staff and caretakers at Schuyler Ridge Residential Health Care in Clifton Park for their comfort and care. Relatives and friends may call from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm, Monday, Feb. 1, 2010 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes , 628 North Broadway, (584-5373).
