Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Mathilda B. Viola, age 98, died peacefully on May 5, 2015, at Saratoga Hospital, after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family. Tillie was born on May 28, 1916, in Union City, NJ, the daughter of Louis and Marie (Pezzotta) Paglierani. Tillie thoroughly enjoyed being creative and crafty. She exceled at quilting, knitting and floral design all to the delight of her family and friends who reaped the benefits of her intricate masterpieces. She was also a talented seamstress, learning the trade from her mother, Marie, who worked in the Garment District of New York City. Tillie was married to the love of her life, Bernard Viola, for nearly 70 years, until his passing in October 2009. Tillie and Ben raised their children and enjoyed their grandchildren in the home the couple built literally from the ground up - one brick at a time - as newlyweds in Northvale, NJ. Tillie enjoyed their home being filled with laughter and love. Her passion for cooking was a welcome to family and friends, especially on Sunday afternoons. She was famous for her frequently requested lasagna. In addition to raising their children, Tillie was active in the local community. She founded the first Girl Scout lone troop in Northvale. She was also a long-time member of St. Anthony's Parish in Northvale. Tillie was involved with the Degree of Pocahontas, the women's auxiliary of the Improved Order of the Red Men, an American fraternal order. She was an enthusiastic lead volunteer in the auxiliary and was proud to serve as president, or Great Pocahontas, of the State of New Jersey. Tillie and Ben enjoyed traveling in their retirement, especially throughout the United States and Canada. They frequently visited their children and grandchildren. They often attended their grandchildren's sporting events, were present at graduations, and always made everyone feel special. In addition to her parents and husband, Tillie was preceded in death by her brothers, Louis and Aldo Paglierani. She is survived by her children: Mary Lynn Schatke; Donna (Charles) Marcason; Barry (Roseann) Viola. She is also the beloved grandmother to: Christopher (Timberly) Schatke, Thomas (Laura) Schatke, Aimee (Edward) Gormley, Emily (Ryan) Tolmie. She was the loving "GiGi" to great-grandson, Rocco Tolmie. Tillie was very excited to welcome another great-grandchild in July 2015. There will be a private graveside service for immediate family members at the Rockland Cemetery in Sparkhill, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent in Tillie's name to St. Joseph's Indian School, P O Box 326, Chamberlain, SD 57326 or the charity of one's choice.
