Saratoga Springs - Mendez Avery passed away at his home on Thursday, January 5, 2017.

Born in New York City, he is the only child of the marriage of Aldine Avery, Sr and Geneva Avery. He attended and graduated from the Saratoga Public School system. After high school, he attended Hudson Valley Community College and received a BS in Political Science from Siena College. Mendez held many positions in several New York State agencies including; the Department of Corrections, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Jones Beach Authority, and the Department of Health.  He was the Human Resource Director for the NYS. Health Department. He retired after completing more than 30 years as a civil servant. Mendez was also the Vice President of the Upstate Chapter of Blacks in Government.

A celebration of the life of Mendez S. Avery will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at 12 noon at the WEST SIDE SPORTS Bar and Grill, 112 Congress, Street Saratoga Springs, NY 12866, (518-691-0193).
