Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Michael John Maloney peacefully passed away at his home in Saratoga Springs with his family by his side on November 19, 2012. He was 87. Mr. Maloney was predeceased by his beloved mother Rose Maloney and survived by his loving wife of 62 years, JoAnn Smith Maloney and his daughters Nancy Maloney, Marcia Szochet and Kelly Brown. A lifelong resident of Saratoga Springs, Mr. Maloney was a 1943 graduate of St. Peter's Academy. He went on to proudly serve his country in World War II with the United States Marine Corps in the South Pacific on Iwo Jima Island. Mr. Maloney was a dedicated 43 year lineman for the New York Telephone Company. He felt great pride in serving his community and was greatly admired for his fairness and strong work ethic by his Telephone Union brethren. Family was important to Mike Maloney. He always expressed admiration and pride to those he loved and warmly welcomed Garrett Brown (Kelly) and Mel Szochet (Marcia) into his family as sons. His grandchildren were his biggest blessing and joy. He helped raise his grandson Sandy Michael Campoli of Saratoga Springs. His granddaughters Abigail Grace, Nora Joy and Mageean Rose Brown of Hoosick Falls called him "Mikie". Mr. Maloney loved to travel and took annual summer trips with his family to Cape Cod and the Jersey Shore. One memorable trip included travel to his ancestral homeland of Ireland. He loved watching horseraces at the track in Saratoga and was quick to remember the important horses and races from days past. A pet lover at heart, Mike loved his two Miniature Schnauzers, "Scooter" and "Tiffany." A true gentleman with class and grace, Mike Maloney held doors open for others, shoveled snow for neighbors and always said a kind word even to strangers. He preferred a suit coat to a tee shirt and enjoyed music from the likes of Sinatra and Bennett. Mike Maloney is also survived by a cousin, Timothy Maloney from Phoenix, Arizona and several nieces and nephews from the Cummings Family - Diane, Keith, Kevin, David and Christopher. His family gives their gratitude and thanks to the dedicated medical professionals who cared for him in his final weeks, Theodore Laddis, MD; Stewart Silvers, MD; Tammy Wheeler, PA and Kelli Foley, RN. Relatives and friends may call from 9 to 11am Friday, Nov. 23, 2012 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (584-5373).
