Saratoga Springs, NY- Michael J. Smith, 86 died on November 15, 2020, at the Home of the Good Shepherd in Wilton, NY. Michael was born to Irish immigrants, Michael and Annie (Bogan) Smith, in Jersey City, New Jersey. He grew up in Verplank, NY on the Hudson River where he enjoyed close friendships that lasted his whole life.
He was proud to be American Irish. Michael embraced his Irish roots and remained close to his extended family in Ireland. Michael's life was one of service. He entered the Navy and served in active duty during the Korean War aboard the USS New Jersey. He was grateful for the opportunity to serve his country, and his patriotism was apparent throughout his life. He proudly served as a New York State Trooper retiring as a sergeant in the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. While serving with the State Police, Michael graduated from Dutchess Community College and later received his bachelor's degree from Mercy College.
After retirement from the State Police, Michael worked for the Federal Department of Transportation and later at the Saratoga Racetrack and Saratoga Harness Track as a security officer. He loved horses and spent many happy days watching the races and working at the tracks. With each new adventure, he made lasting friendships. Michael loved music and enjoyed singing. He embraced and treasured his Roman Catholic faith. He was a member of The Church of Saint Peter and sang in their choir for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Commodore John Barry Division from whom he received the Irish Catholic Award, and he was a member of the Association of NY State Retired Troopers. Michael volunteered for many years at the Saratoga EOC Soup Kitchen; washing dishes and cleanup became his specialty. He was well known for saying, "A clean ship is a fighting ship."
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Joanne (Napoleon) Smith; his daughters Kathleen Chovnick, Marlana Padovani and Jillian Reynolds and his sons Ron Zuba and Michael T. Smith (Joanne); his grandchildren: Timothy (Ann), Sarah, Zachary, Luke, Andrew, Nick, Noah, Alex and Timmy; his brother, John Smith and John's wife Susan; his sisters, Mary Lamando, Elizabeth Marro, Margaret Saladino, and Eileen Brodie. Michael was further blessed with the presence and love of many nieces and nephews. He treasured his close relationship with his cousins Peter and Kathleen in Dublin, Ireland.
Joanne and the family are immeasurably grateful to Morgan Cameron, Lindsey Marcinkiewicz, RN, and all of the wonderful loving staff of the Home of the Good Shepherd in Wilton, NY, and also Alice Benfey, RN and the caring people of Saratoga County Hospice who provided expertise, comfort and dignity for Michael and his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the historic Church of St. Peter, Saratoga Springs, NY at 10am on Friday, September 10, 2021 . Interment with military honors will follow at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville.
Members of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians and the Saratoga Council Knights of Columbus are invited to attend the mass.
