Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Mildred Grant formerly of Glenmont, N.Y., Whiting, N.J., and Hicksville, N.Y., joined her beloved husband Joseph in heaven on Saturday, July 23, 2011. Born on March 29, 1924 in Queens, N.Y., Mildred Bertha Hoffman was the daughter of the late Margaret Koch Hoffman and Edward George Hoffman. Her younger sister Gloria joined their family when Millie was three years old. At the age of 16, Mildred graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School in Glendale, N.Y., and began working in Manhattan as a comptometer operator. Mildred met the love of her life, Joseph Francis Grant, on a blind date, and they married on April 1, 1945. They were a team for 49 years until Joes death on May 3, 1994. In 1949, the couple purchased a Levitt home in Long Islands Hicksville, where they raised their three children. The family lived in Naples, Italy, for three years, where Joe was stationed in the U.S. Coast Guard. After Joes retirement, the couple enjoyed the company of their friends, playing cards for pennies, bowling, golfing and traveling. They moved to Whiting, N.J., in the mid-1980s. After Joe passed away, Mildred moved to Glenmont, N.Y., and enjoyed kibitzing with her grandchildren as they grew. Family was of the utmost importance to Mildred. Her loving and caring manner, gentle guidance, unending patience and understanding was all you could wish for in a mother. Even in trying times, Millie worried about others before herself. Her children and grandchildren loved her dearly and will miss her for years to come. Mildred is predeceased by her parents, her sister Gloria Strasser, and her loving husband, Joseph F. Grant. Shes survived by her children, Joseph F. Grant (Jean) of Oswego, N.Y.; Donna G. Canavan (Marty) of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and Richard E. Grant (Glenna) of Glenmont, N.Y.; as well as six grandchildren: Allison M. Grant of Dansville, N.Y., Katherine G. Tschudy (Pete) of Hamilton, Mass., Alexis K. Grant of Washington, D.C., Jenna M. Grant (Marc) of Washington D.C., Richard E. Grant, Jr. of New York, N.Y., and Matthew G. Canavan of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., plus one great-grandchild, Gabriel Joseph Tschudy of Hamilton, Mass. Mildred will be inurned with her husband Joe in the columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery, Washington DC. There will be no public calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing& Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs 584-5373.
