Saratoga Springs, NY - Milton J. Green, 91 entered into eternal rest on April 22, 2013 at Pleasant Valley Nursing Home, Argyle, NY. He previously resided in Saratoga Springs for 40 years, from 1964 until 1993 and from 2000 until 2011. Milt was born in Smethport, PA where he thoroughly enjoyed working on his grandfather Samuel Green's farm during school vacations and summers. After graduating from Bradford High School in 1939 he began working for the J. C. Penney Co. in Bradford, PA. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in April 1942. Milt married Marilyn L. Evans of Bradford on October 16, 1943, shortly before shipping out to the Pacific Theater. Armament Officer 1st Lieutenant Green was stationed with the 5th Airforce, 345 Bombardment Group (Air Apaches) in the Philippines and Okinawa. He returned home in 1946 and resumed his career in retail management with the J. C. Penney Company. After almost 40 years in retailing with various chain store retailers Milt returned to his agri-business roots and joined the dairy division of Stewarts Ice Cream Company, retiring in 1987. Milt is predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Marilyn and his brothers William H. Green and James S. Green. He is survived by a daughter, Debra S. Weih (Falk) of Weissenborn, Germany and a son, Thomas S. Green (Bonnie Hathaway) of Greenwich, NY, grandchildren Jeannette M. Green of Newbury Park, CA, Colleen M. Noonan of Gansevoort, NY, Jeannette and Colleen's mother, Angela M. Green of Saratoga Springs, NY, Gretchen May of Schuylerville, NY and MSgt Christopher May (Kariena) of Tuscon, AZ and great-grandchildren William, Madeline, Claire, Grayson, Jaxson and Payton. From 1947 until 1982 Milt was active in the Presbyterian Church and became an ordained Elder and served as a member of Session. Thereafter he continued to maintain an active spiritual life spending a significant amount of time in many different churches. Milt loved the English language, read voraciously, commanded an extensive vocabulary and loved to challenge himself with crossword puzzles. He also challenged himself with mechanical puzzles such as automobiles and various household appliances, much to his wife's chagrin. He and Marilyn enjoyed camping and spent most summer vacations with their children and grandchildren at campsites located throughout the Northeast. Milt's excellent health into his late eighties allowed him to travel extensively in Europe during his frequent extended visits to his daughter Debra in Germany. Milt was a gregarious individual, always willing to engage a stranger in conversation. He would help another person in trouble but found it very difficult to ask anyone to help him, not wanting to bother anyone. He was generous to a fault, sharing whatever he had whenever he saw a need, living the Biblical injunction, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." The family would like to express their most heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Pleasant Valley Nursing Home for the outstanding level of care that they provided to Milt over the last three years. The staff provided a warm and caring environment that allowed Milt and his family to feel at home and be comfortable even unto the last. A celebration of Milton's life will be held Saturday, May 4, 2013 starting at 1:00 p.m. at William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in Milt's name be made to the Albany Medical College, 43 New Scotland Ave., Albany, NY 12208 or to a charity of one's choice.
