Saratoga Springs, NY - Newman Edward "Ned" Wait, III of Melanie Drive, passed away on August 21, 2012 from cancer. He was 65 years of age. He was the son of Newman Edward "Pete" Wait, Jr. and Jane Caroline Adams both of Saratoga Springs. Ned graduated from School No. 2 in Wilton, New York attending kindergarten through fifth grade in the one-room schoolhouse. He graduated from Saratoga Springs High School in 1965 and attended Cornell University and Ithaca College. He served two tours of duty in the United States Army in Korea during the Vietnam War and was a sergeant in the signal corps. Ned worked as the manager of the box office of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, as a photographer's assistant in New York City and as an assistant stage manager for the New York City Ballet. While attending Cornell University he owned and operated King's Subs with his friend Chris Bond. He enjoyed success in a variety of careers including Tour Manager of John Houseman's The Acting Company out of New York, Manager of John Clifford's Los Angeles Ballet Company and Saratoga Cable TV as well as proprietor of his own computer sales and repair store in Pennsylvania. He was most recently retired as an Assistant Vice President with The Adirondack Trust Company in Saratoga Springs, NY. He was a volunteer with the Selective Service Board for Saratoga County and the Y-knot sailing group in Lake George. Ned was a lifelong athlete. As a teenager he won his age group in the Hudson River White Water Derby in the singles Kayak division and he loved snow skiing and water skiing. However his lifelong passion was sailing. Ned sailed aboard the America out of Newport, RI, the Bluenose out of Lunenburg, NS, and the Pride of Baltimore II out of Annapolis, MD on her 2005 transatlantic voyage. He sailed aboard Seastar in the 2002 Newport to Bermuda race. Ned owned Windigo, out of Westport, NY on Lake Champlain. Ned also had a deep appreciation of music and the arts. In the early 1960's he heard an unknown artist by the name of Bob Dylan perform at Café Lena in Saratoga. He was a friend of Frank Sullivan who included Ned in one of his annual Christmas poems published in the New Yorker magazine. Ned was married twice, first to Nancy Davis of California and second to Marian Laird of Washington DC. Ned's keen intellect, sense of humor and compassion for others endeared him to all those he met. He had a contagious laugh and an easy manner that charmed everyone. He had good taste, and an iron constitution. He will be sorely missed by his many friends and especially his family. Survivors include his mother Jane Adams Wait of Saratoga Springs; his sisters Marian Wait Walsh of Saratoga Springs and Caroline Wait Putman of Ballston Spa and his brother Charles Valentine Wait of Saratoga Springs. Relatives and friends may call from 5 to 7pm Friday, Aug. 24, 2012 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (584-5373).
