IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Norman O.
Pearlstein
January 27, 1925 – October 26, 2018
Wilton, NY - Norman O. Pearlstein, age 93, of Home of the Good Shepherd at 60 Waller Road, passed away peacefully at his home on October 26, 2018. He was born on January 27, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY and was the son of the late Irving and Miriam Katz Pearlstein. He attended New Utrecht High School and St. John's University in Brooklyn, graduating from college in 1949. He received an MBA at City College of New York in 1956.
He met the love of his life, Cecilia Jaget at a classical music concert in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. They married on July 3, 1952, celebrating 66 years of marriage earlier this year. Norman wrote his Master's thesis while in the early years of his marriage. He worked extremely hard, balancing a full time job, helping his wife care for their first-born son, Tzvi, and finishing graduate school at night.
Norman was proud of his time of military service in the US Army during World War II. He was an artist, creating beautiful paintings and drawings for most of his life. He also loved classical music and could identify almost any piece of music. He was good with technology and recently loved his "Alexa" who would play any music he requested. He was most fond of her ability to give him the current temperature.
In the early 1960's he succeeded in taking a leadership role in his New City neighborhood in order to push back Route 304 (which was slated to run right through his backyard). He was also extremely proud when he passed his Certified Public Accounting exam in 1974 when he was 49. He worked as a comptroller for several construction companies in the counties of Rockland and Westchester, NY over his lifetime. He lived most of his life in New City, NY, where he and Celia raised three children.
Other accomplishments he had were running a marathon with his beloved dog, Grand, in his late 50's. He was a health food "nut" and exercise fiend before those things were in vogue.
Norman retired with Celia to Boynton Beach, Fl. in 1996 and lived there until January 2015. While there, Norman participated in the Sheriff Auxiliary Patrol. One of his favorite activities in Florida was singing in the synagogue choir. Norman and Celia enjoyed traveling together to Alaska, Mexico, Ireland, Israel and other places.
In 2015, they moved to Saratoga Springs and lived at Woodlawn Commons for 3 years and 4 months. They moved to Home of the Good Shepherd in Wilton, NY in May of 2018.
Norman is survived by many members of a very loving family; his wife, Cecilia Pearlstein; their children, Tzvi Pearlstein of Deerfield Beach, FL, Ronda (Lawrence) Fein of Saratoga Springs, and Debra (David) Riessen of Larchmont, NY. He is also survived by 3 siblings, Barbara (Harris) Linder of Bluffton, SC, Marvin (Anne) Pearlstein of Bluffton, SC, and Sheva (Joseph-deceased) Gunzenhauser of Cortland, NY; grandchildren, Jonathan Fein, Casey (Sari) Fein, Rachel Pearlstein, Rivka (Gilad) Mordekovich, Jared Fein, Samuel Riessen, and Leah Pearlstein, and two great-grandchildren, Yael Mordekovich and Mira Fein. He is also survived by the siblings of his wife and their families and many nieces and nephews and their spouses and children, all of whom Norman was extremely fond.
The family wishes to thank all of the people who touched Norman's life including staff and residents of Woodlawn Commons, and the wonderful Home of the Good Shepherd administration, nursing, kitchen, activity, hairdressing, cleaning staff, and residents. He was grateful to his physician Dr. Warren Litts who reminded him to listen to more classical music when he was feeling the pains of aging. He appreciated the help of Ruth Fish, FNP, Drs. Manish Mehta, Richard Jones, and dentists Kelly Herbs, Gregory Dodd, and Megan Mayo.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 29, 2018, at 10 a.m. at the William J. Burke & Sons/ Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (518-584-5373). Burial with military honors will follow at 12pm at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that everyone follow Norman's advice the day he died by showing more kindness and love to others. Please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
