Obituary
Round Lake, NY - Norman MacMillan Walter passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2018. Mr Walter died peacefully at the Home of the Good Shepherd in Saratoga Springs, NY. He was 94 years of age. The younger son of Alphons Rudolph Walter and Margaret MacMillan Walter, Norman was born and raised in Lebanon Pa, along with his brother Andrew T. Walter. He received both his Bachelor and Masters degrees in Physics from Pennsylvania State University.
Mr. Walter served in the Pacific with 111th Infantry during World War II. On returning home from the war, he moved to Schenectady to work with GE and eventually to the Philadelphia area where Norman was employed with the Boeing Company. During this time, Mr. Walter developed an interest in playing and tinkering with his favorite instrument, the organ. This led to what would become a lifetime of engagement with the Organ Historical Society.
It was through the OHS that Norman met and married his second wife, Edna Van Duzee. Together they enjoyed life in Round Lake, where they were both involved in every aspect of the Round Lake Auditorium. Norman was well known for his volunteer work for nearly 20 years as the "man behind the scenes". Norman also took great interest in the restoration of the Mabel Tainter Memorial in Menomonie, Wisconsin. Built near the turn of the century, and housing what has been called one of the 15 "most spectacular theaters in the world", this lovely building memorializes the short life of Norman's relative, Mabel.
Norman was preceded in death by his wife Edna, and his brother Andrew. He is survived by a niece, Margaret Valiante of Scottsdale, AZ, and 3 nephews, Andrew Walter, of Oceanside CA, Jim Walter of Oak Park, Illinois, and Bill Walter, of Union SC, as well as great nieces and nephews and 3 great, great nieces. He is also survived by his step-children, Barbara Jean Michelin of Wappingers Falls, NY, and Robin Van Duzee, of Brigantine, NJ.
Mr Walter will be remembered by his family as "chief historian". His uncanny ability to remember details meant we all looked to him to fill us in on generations of colorful family stories. Along with the stories, we will miss his sense of humor, his gorgeous big blue eyes and his heart of gold.
Norman's family would like to thank Barbara Jean and Alan Michelin as well as Fran Gailor for their years long "above and beyond" care of Norman. We would also like to thank Peregrine Clifton Park and Home of the Good Shepherd Saratoga Springs for their love and care for Norman.
An interment ceremony will take place at the Evergreen Cemetery on Lake Menomin, in Menominee this summer
