Obituary

Saratoga Springs Paul G. Zabala, formerly of Greenfield Center and the Home of the Good Shepherd, passed away August 21, 2008 at the Wesley Health Care Center surrounded by his loving family. Paul was born in New York City and moved as an infant to the family farm in Greenfield Center. Paul was the son of the late Stephen P. and Veronica (Cabala) Zabala. He was a graduate of Saratoga Springs High School and was employed as a Laboratory Technician at International Paper Company for over 40 years, retiring in 1989. Paul was an extremely well-read man and had a passion for sports, most notably boxing and baseball. He was a contributing journalist over the years for the International Boxing Research Organization (IBRO) compiling stats on numerous boxers, going as far back as 1905. Paul also enjoyed learning about world history, events and travel, including his parents homeland of Czechoslovakia. Paul toured the globe without ever leaving home with all of the knowledge he gained. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Estelle Zabala, brother Joseph Skibik and sister-in-law Catherine Zabala. He is survived by two brothers, Stephen J. (Mary) Zabala and William J. Zabala of Saratoga Springs, seven nephews, four nieces, nine great nephews and nieces, and one great-grand nephew. At Pauls request there will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 25th at St. Clements Church, 231 Lake Avenue, with the Rev. Neil Draves-Arpaia officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Peters Cemetery, West Avenue. Special thanks to the kindhearted staff of the 4th floor Springs Unit at Wesley for the care and compassion they provided to Paul, especially in his final days. Given Pauls enjoyment for continually learning, memorial gifts may be made in his name to Saratoga Central Catholic High School, Attn: Christopher Signor, Principal, 247 Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 the alma mater of his caregivers, his nephews Stephen and Gerard Zabala, or to The Wesley Foundation Project Homecoming, 131 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
