Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY- Penelope "Penny" Gunn Miller, age 83, of Saratoga Springs peacefully passed away on June 5, 2023 at Albany Medical Center surrounded by the love of family and friends following a brief illness.

Penny was born June 8, 1939 in Brooklyn, NY the daughter of the late Charles Gunn and Margaret (Custy) Gunn.

After graduating from Haverstraw High School at 16, Penny went on to study at Potsdam College, earning her bachelor's degree in English and History. She found her calling as an educator in the Pearl River School District where she taught 6th grade English and Reading from 1959-1992. Shortly after beginning her career, she received her Master's Degree from Columbia University, and worked throughout her career helping teach other educators. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional society for women educators, for more than 30 years.

Following the passing of their parents, Penny became more than just an older sister to Meg, but stepped into the role of guardian and mother, further strengthening their bond. In 1971 Penny married her husband, William E. Miller. After her retirement, Penny and Bill moved to Saratoga Springs to be closer to her sister Meg and family. Following the passing of Bill, Penny focused even more on family and friends, and brought Nikki into her life. The most perfect companion she could have asked for, Nikki a white boxer was always with her, and was a reflection of Penny's personality: happy, larger than life and full of unconditional love. Penny also found tremendous joy throughout her life providing spiritual advisement and guidance to countless people. Penny gave a piece of herself to every single person she met.

Throughout her life Penny enjoyed travel, family, and friends. One of her fondest memories was a trip to Scotland with her nephews, Mike and Phil. Being able to share their family's Scottish heritage with them, as well as exploring the highlands together was a trip she often reminisced about, and her nephews will never forget.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased  ; husband, William; and beloved dog, Nikki.

She is survived by her sister, Margaret (Thomas) Montelone; nephews, Paul, Michael (Kim), and Philip (Ella) Montelone; niece, Stephanie (Mark) Sukert; great nephews and nieces, Matthew, Brandon, and Claire Sukert, Trinity and Cameron Montelone, and Perry Montelone; as well as extended family and friends, who will miss her dearly.
