Obituary

SARATOGA SPRINGS – Peter John Cushing of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., died peacefully at Home of the Good Shepherd, Church Street, on May 24, 2018, with his children by his side. He was 86.

Born in Schenectady on Jan. 27, 1932, he was the son of Paul E. Cushing, Sr., and Ingebjorg Roal Farstad.
He was an altar boy, drawn to urban mischief and the Adirondacks, who lost his father on Christmas Eve as a teen. Later voted Most Happy-Go-Lucky in high school, he broke his leg on the ski team, took a trip to Bermuda and generally set out to have a good time.

He went to Brown School, Christian Brothers Academy, Nott Terrace High School and Bryant College. He then joined the Air Force where, after a year in Greenland, he was sent to Fort Bragg, N.C., and met Dorothy Jean Allen of Birmingham, Ala., his wife for the next 51 years.

As honorably discharged newlyweds, they drove his 1952 MG-TD back to Schenectady where they started a family and he went to work for Cushing Stone Company, ending as secretary-treasurer.

He was active in the Boy Scouts of America from 1967 to 1980, receiving many honors, first as scoutmaster of Troop 66, then as Schenectady County Council president and on the Northeast Regional executive board.

He was a member of the Mohawk Club, Settlers Hill Gun Club, and Schenectady Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce, and was a board member of AAA Northway. For years he and his business partner Dave Mulhall ran Photo-Video Productions.

A man of action and curious motivation, he was at times a bowler, a target shooter, a hunter and a gunsmith, as well as a collector of Remington Rolling Block rifles and a fan of old movies and classical music. He took up scuba diving and was a YMCA certified scuba instructor for 15 years, and a Schenectady YMCA executive board member and trustee. A longtime Lake George boater and diver, he also dove all over the Caribbean and pursued underwater photography as a hobby.

Pete was a fun-loving guy with a sense of humor. If you needed something, he would help you.
He was predeceased by his wife in 2004, and by his brother Paul E. Cushing, Jr. Survivors include his daughter, Karen Cushing Walker, of Ballston Spa; his son Michael Cushing (Heather) of Saratoga Springs; his grandchildren, Rebecca Cushing of Great Barrington, Mass., Andrew Cushing of Brooklyn, and Olivia Walker of Ballston Spa; his nephew, Patrick Cushing (Jacky), of Alexandria, Va.; his niece, Kathleen Cushing, of Keele, Staffordshire, UK; and grandnieces Erin Cushing and Elena Cushing.

Funeral services will be private. Peter will be buried with military honors next to his wife in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Boy Scouts of America, 1325 West Walnut Hill Lane, Irving, TX 75015.
