Obituary

Ballston Spa, NY Peter Dickens of Milton Avenue, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2012 at his residence, following a long courageous battle with brain cancer. He was 57. Born on Feb. 14, 1955 in Warner Robins, Georgia, he was the son of the late Fay H. and Phyllis (Huffmire) Dickens and was a 1973 graduate of Saratoga Springs High School. He was a member of the schools Boys Varsity Club and lettered in football and track and participated in baseball and basketball. He received an associates degree in construction technology from Fulton Montgomery Community College in Johnstown in 1975 and completed his freshman year at the University of New Hampshire, having played on their freshman football team. He loved traveling to the University of NH football games supporting the team and visiting with is closest friend, Sean McDonnell, coach of the UNH Wildcats. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed many recreational activities and sports, including boating, motorcycling and snowmobiling. In his youth, he actively participated in the Saratoga Pop Warner Football League and was a member of the 1969 Super Bowl Champion Yearlings, coached by his late father. Pete was a multitalented and skilled tradesman, knowledgeable in all aspects of construction and specialized in custom millwork, cabinetry and trim. He was previously employed as a subcontractor by various area construction companies, most recently with Bonacio Construction, Inc., the highlight of his long career. Survivors include his loving wife, Mary Frances Murphy Dickens; his siblings, David Dickens of Rochester, NH, Deryl and Leo Loviza of Saratoga Springs and Brian and his wife Laurel Dickens of Manchester, CT; his aunt and uncle, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Relatives and friends may call from 9 to 10:30am Saturday, May 12, 2012 at the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway (584-5373). Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30am in the funeral home by the Rev. Neil Draves-Arpaia. Burial will follow in Greenridge Cemetery, Lincoln Ave. Memorials may be made to Community Hospice of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs.
