Obituary

SARATOGA SPRINGS Philip J. Haggerty, known to many as Ajeya, died August 28, 2008 at his home on Beekman Street. He was 59. Born in New York City, he grew up on Long Island in Carle Place. Soon after graduating from SUNY Albany, he moved to Saratoga Springs. Phil was a freelance photographer in Saratoga for 34 years. Clients included Skidmore College, Union College, Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Adirondack Trust Company, Saratoga Hospital, Albany Law School and New York State, among many others. He was an avid documenter of life in the town he greatly loved. His work appeared in a number of local publications including Adirondack Life and Saratoga Living as well as numerous books and articles about his long time mentor, R. Buckminster Fuller. He was also an enthusiastic photography instructor who taught classes at the Saratoga County Arts Council and other continuing education organizations. Phil had an intense curiosity for many subjects, and was especially fascinated with space and rocketry, which began when he was a youngster. He extensively followed the Space Program and other developments in the exploration of the cosmos. He loved to blow the socks off of anyone interested in peering at the moon through his telescope. As a follower of Osho (Bhagwan Rasjneesh), Phil believed in the importance of celebrating and enjoying life through love, humor, meditation, and creativity. Phil was longtime admirer and scholar of Buckminster Fuller. Fullers inventions including the geodesic dome and his philosophies concerning the future of humankind deeply resonated with Phil. Phil had a great affinity for the outdoors and could often be found exploring local nature trails and hiking in the Adirondacks. Sometimes he found it sufficient to just be sitting in his backyard reading a book or magazine on the many topics he enjoyed. He is survived by his adoring son Sean Buckminster Haggerty; his loving sister Maureen Haggerty/Kurtz and her husband Neil. He will be sorely missed by his many caring friends and the Saratoga arts community. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday Sept. 6, 2008 at the Gallery, 110 Spring St. at 11 a.m. A potluck luncheon and swimming will follow on Homestead Rd. Contributions can be made in his honor to Saratoga P.L.A.N. (saratogaplan.org) and to the Saratoga County Arts Council (saratoga-arts.org). Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes of 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs (584-5373).
