Wilton, NY - Poul Turin passed away on November 26, 2009. Poul was born on March 27, 1918 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He graduated with a degree in Interior Architecture with a concentration in furniture design in 1940. Poul received commissions for furniture designs due to his creativity and mastery. Poul meets his soul mate, Grete Gaarn, and gets married on October 12, 1941. During World War II, Poul served as a sergeant with Copenhagen's engineering department. With fewer opportunities in post-war Denmark, Poul, Grete, and their first son, Boje, immigrated to the United States in 1946. Poul came to understand that people were interested in Danish design and artistic expression. During their careers, Grete and Poul offered the furniture and home accessories of celebrated contemporary scandinavian designs in their shops in Vermont, Maine and New York. Many customers became valued friends attracted by Grete and Poul's unique scandinavian charm and hospitality. During 68 years of marriage, Grete and Poul have nurtured their family and friends, celebrated their many successes, and shared their enjoyment of life! Poul is survived by his wife and best friend Grete; his children, Boje (Carol), Lars (Amber) and Neina (Duane). His nephews, Georg Turin Clemmensen, Poul Turin Clemmensen (Gerd) and their families. Poul's grandchildren, Daniel, Brian (Heather), Marilyn (Dale), Dusty (deceased), Ali Rose (Rick), Ethan (Jenna), Kelsey (Scott), Robyn (Sean), Jennifer (Francois), Kyle (Danielle) and Abigail (Dennis). Poul's great grandchildren, Josh, Kier, Megan, Cade, Breanna, Brina, Abigail, Ashley, Carmela, and Damian. Among the friends who became family are Ebba and Cutler Severance (both deceased), Nancy and Warren Severance and family, Hope (deceased) and Eric Severance and family, Suzanne, Joanne, Elizabeth and Dan Wheeler, and Bunny and Art Ward (both deceased). Poul's interests and inspirations included observations of nature's beauty, gatherings of family and friends sharing food and drink, classical and jazz music appreciation, and ballroom and swing dancing. Poul was past president of Manchester VT Rotary Club International and the sponsor of the Club at Biddeford, ME. Decades ago Poul rowed for the Students Rowing Club of Copenhagen. More recently Poul shared his rowing excitement and enjoyment with fellow members of Saratoga Rowing Association at Fish Creek. There will be a family gathering commemorating Poul's life.
