Saratoga Springs, NY - Liu Qigan, aged 89, passed away peacefully on the evening of January 2, 2025 in Saratoga Springs, NY, surrounded by her family and loving husband.
She was born on November 4, 1936 in Suzhou, China to father Liu Wenyuan and mother Zhu Shufang. She graduated from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China and joined the Shanghai Entomology Institute at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, where she performed important research as an entomologist to protect crops and livestock. She married her husband, Lin Sijun in 1963 and the pair had one daughter.
Liu Qigan was a fiery spirit with limitless generosity who dedicated her life to providing for others. In Shanghai, she was a pillar of her community and cared for her neighbors from the bottom of her heart. Even 50 years later she is remembered there for her generosity. As one example, in the 1960s when the city fell on difficult times and food was severely rationed, she gave the entirety of her milk ration to her neighbors to feed their infant child.
Her generosity infused her home too. She was a fierce protector of her family and always prioritized her loved ones. After retirement, she moved to the United States to join her daughter and son-in-law and help raise her two grandchildren. No matter how small the task, she would complete it with diligence and her own flourish. She loved enjoying life with her family by her side and traveled across the world, including across North America, Europe, and Asia.
She is survived by her husband, Lin Sijun, daughter Lin Qun, son-in-law Su Xiao, granddaughter Rachel Su, and grandson Max Su. She lived a happy and full life, and her spirit will live in our hearts forever.
Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 (518-584-5373).
