Obituary

Saratoga Springs, NY - Richard J. "Dick" Farrell, age 74, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 19, 2020. Dick hailed from Green Bay, WI and his love of all things "cheesehead" is one small part of his enduring legacy. His career began at his alma mater, St. Norbert College in West De Pere, WI. Starting in the admission office, he continued his 34 year career at SUNY Albany, which included earning his EdD and culminated as assistant to the President for "interesting stuff." He loved his work and enjoyed the intellectual challenges of his position.

Dick prided himself on being a raconteur. He could extend a joke and add extra tidbits until it was hard to recall the joke. Then he nailed the punchline. He loved to write and was a wordsmith for the first order.

His passion for the outdoors included fishing and hunting. He was in the Big Simond Hunting and Fishing Club at Tupper Lake for over 40 years and spent many happy weekends with his friends, his son Josh, and his grandchildren wandering in the woods and telling "Wisconsin" stories to his fellow members. September through December was a time of fabulous meals and camaraderie at this home away from home. He spent countless hours on Lake Saratoga fishing with those who were called friends, but considered to be family. Dick cultivated a new generation of outdoor enthusiasts by inviting young people along for an adventure that typically ended with an ice cream cone at Stewart's.

He leaves behind his wife, Pam, son Josh (Kitren) Farrell, daughter Molly Farrell (Matt Garand), and three grandsons, Liam, Nolan and Quinn who were the light of his life. HE was one of three siblings and is survived by two favorite sisters Mary F. (Keith) Bednarowski and Catherine Farrell. Recently. Dick and Pam celebrated 50 years of marriage. He was a devoted father who showed and told his children how much he loved them on a daily basis. Dick started "Camp Grandpa and Grandma" bringing each grandchild to visit for their own week of fun. These weeks were the highlight of his summer.

The wake will be held from 4 to 7pm Friday (Jan. 24) at the William J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home. A celebration of Dick's life during Mass at 11am Saturday in the Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial donations in his name to St. Peter's Church , to assist with various projects including a new roof.
