Saratoga Springs - Richard A. Jones, 81, was called to rest on December 16, 2020. He died at his home in Saratoga Springs, NY after a long illness. He was born on December 18, 1938 in New York City to John W. Jones and Constance DeHart Jones.
Richard received his early education at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in NYC. The family relocated to Saratoga Springs, NY where he continued his education at Saint Clement's Catholic School and later attended Saratoga Springs High School. In his younger years, he was an avid hunter and photographer. He was a member of the Saratoga Rifle Range and was a great marksman. He was also a champion wrestler and captain of the Saratoga Springs High School Wrestling Team.
Richard served in the U.S. Army in the Signal Corps in Korea and as a Sergeant at Fort Huachuca Army Base in Arizona. His love of sharpshooting led to his receiving a medal in the service for outstanding marksmanship. Upon his honorable discharge and return to civilian life, he met and married Irene Burke of Round Lake, NY, and from that union they had a wonderful son, Richard A. Jones, Jr. (Tony). He enjoyed a close relationship with his son and was very proud of his accomplishments.
He worked for the NYS Department of Transportation, Region 1 Saratoga Springs Residency for twenty years. He had a great, inquisitive mind and a sense of humor that made everyone happy to be around him. Always ready to help when someone was in need, Richard was loved and admired by all who knew him.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, John and Constance Jones, and his older brother, Arnold J. Jones. He leaves to cherish his memory his son and daughter-in-law Lynne, three grandchildren, Richard Jones, III of NYC, Nina of Chicago, IL and Elena of NYC; two sisters, Marcia Morton of Baltimore, Md., and Judith (Joseph) Daniel of Port St. Lucie, FL; an uncle and aunt, Edward and Judith Ogburn of NYC; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to celebrate Richard's life in private. An interment service with military honors will take place at a later date at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Road, Schuylerville, NY.
