Richard James Rowland, Sr., a lifelong resident of Saratoga Springs, passed on October 4, 2026 at the age of 95.

Born on June 23rd, 1931, Richard/Dick was the beloved son of William and Helen Kanaly Rowland. Richard was a graduate of St. Peter’s Academy Class of 1949, LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York for his undergraduate degree, Class of 1953, followed by Siena College for his Master’s Degree.

He spent his life doing what he loved, teaching, which he did both in and out of the classroom. Professionally, he began his teaching career in a one room school house in Porter Corners, New York, before going on to teach at Galway Central School, primarily teaching 6th Grade, for 35 years. He was much loved by his students, with several even reaching out decades later thanking him for the important part he played in their lives.

On June 22, 1957, he married the love of his life, Rita Brown Rowland, at the Church of St. Peter where they were active members and volunteers. Together they had four sons; Richard Jr., Michael, Paul and Steven. Taking care of and spending time with his family was Richard’s most important purpose in his life. He shared his love generously and was always the one to make you laugh with his quiet, quick-wit. He will always be remembered for his gentleness, kindness, warmth, and the deep love he had for his family and friends.

Aside from his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Rita, in March 2003 and his brother, William, in April 2000. He is survived by his sons, Richard J. Rowland Jr. (Susan), Paul Rowland (Patricia), Michael Rowland and Steven Rowland (Christine); his cherished grandchildren, Ricky Rowland III (Lauren), Bridget Farry (Matt), Paul Rowland Jr. (Jacqueline), and Matthew Rowland (Rebecca), his great-grandchildren, Sadie Rowland, Aidan Rowland, Sterling Rowland, as well as many family members and dear friends who will miss him deeply.

Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Friday, October 9, 2026 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at William J. Burke & Sons Funeral Home, 628 N Broadway, Saratoga Springs, New York.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 10, at the historic Church of St. Peter, 241 Broadway, Saratoga Springs.

Burial will be immediately following in St. Peter’s cemetery on West Avenue in Saratoga Springs.
