Obituary

SARATOGA SPRINGS - Robert Lisle Bullock, a beloved husband, father and grandfather who devoted himself to family, friends and country, passed away on July 29, 2023, with his loved ones by his side in Saratoga Springs. He was 93.

Born in 1929, in Rochester, Bob was the son of the late Robert Bullock and Ruthlene (Webster) Bullock. He attended school in Rochester, before enrolling at Hobart College. He would ultimately leave Hobart and attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Bob met the love of his life, the former Joan Elizabeth Berger, while he was a cadet at West Point. They married on June 13, 1954, at the Cadet Chapel just days after Bob's graduation. The couple had a lifelong love and appreciation for the traditions of West Point, the sound of a military march, and frequently shared stories of their Army courtship with all interested parties!

After honeymooning at Bob's ancestral summer home on the shores of Lake Ontario in Brighton, Ont., and on Lake George with Joan's family, the couple settled in El Paso, Texas, where Bob trained in artillery. This would be the first of 21 family moves. Their next home was at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn, Bob's next Army post. After Bob took a job with IBM, the family lived first in Fishkill and then in Latham. Bob's next job with American Express brought them to Ossining.

In 1966, when Bob took a position with the State of New York, the couple found a special neighborhood in Delmar that would anchor their family for decades. Before and during the 1980 Olympics, the family relocated briefly to Lake Placid, where Bob was the director of Management Services for the Lake Placid Olympic Organizing Committee, working on behalf of Governor Hugh Carey and the State of New York.

In retirement, the Bullocks lived a full and happy life in Saratoga Springs, where together they enjoyed the spirit of this small city, its people, its beauty, and the exciting summer track seasons. While living there, they devoted countless hours to many local organizations, including Saratoga Hospital, First Night Saratoga, and Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

In their final years, the Bullocks were fortunate to have the assistance of their children and their families. In 2019, the couple moved to Falmouth, Mass., to be near their daughter, Beth. After Joan's passing in 2022, Bob moved to the Wesley Community in Saratoga Springs to be near his son, Bob.

Joan and Bob spent their recent years attending Bethesda Episcopal Church in Saratoga Springs. For the last three years, they greatly enjoyed the loving spirit of their church family at St. Barnabas's Episcopal Church in Falmouth.

Bob will be remembered as a kind and quiet man, who largely lived his life in service to his family and his community. His quiet demeanor was no mask for his keen mind, his intelligence and his curiosity. He loved the simple things in life: a great piece of pie, family dinners, walks downtown, Sunday drives and exploring New England, his morning coffee (not the breakfast coffee, the after-breakfast coffee that came around 10:30 a.m.), meticulously shined shoes and a roaring fire in the fireplace. His pipe smoke was a signal to his family that he would spend a happy Sunday afternoon with a good book.

Bob is survived by his son, Robert (Ann) of Saratoga Springs; his daughter, Elizabeth Bullock-McGrail (Kenneth) of Mashpee, Mass.; his granddaughters, Katharine and Emma of New York City; and his sister, Betty Waterman of Atlanta, Ga. He was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Christine Carlson; and by twins, a boy and girl born to him and Joan in 1958 who passed within the first day of life.

A private family memorial service is planned, with interment in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery.
