Saratoga Springs, NY - Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Robert Douglas Falkenbury, Jr., of Oakland Drive, passed away Wednesday (Mar. 4, 2009) at the Wesley Health Care Center, Lawrence St. He was 89. Born on Jan. 19, 1920 in Saratoga Springs, he was the son of the late Robert D. and Ruth (Horsefield) Falkenbury, Sr., and a graduate of Saratoga Springs High School, class of 1937. He entered the military with the United Sates Army in 1942 serving two tours in the European Theater and one tour in the Far East. A recipient of the Purple Heart with cluster for injuries sustained in action, he also received an Army Commendation medal, ETO Ribbon with four battle stars, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star w/cluster and various other service ribbons. He served as adjutant of the US Army Security Agency School at Ft. Devens, MA and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1964 following 23 years of service. An avid skier, he was an instructor at the YMCA for several years and enjoyed playing golf. He served as Vice-President of the E.D. Starbuck Company store on Broadway for many years prior to his retirement. Survivors include his devoted wife of 63 years, Louise M. (D'Andrea) Falkenbury; one sister, Nancy Schrade, both of Saratoga Springs and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, as well as many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call from 9 to 11am Monday in Our Lady's Chapel in the Parish Center of St. Clement's Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am Monday in St. Clement's Roman Catholic Church, 231 Lake Avenue. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Avenue.
